In my talk, I covered the unique challenges you may encounter in cyber security, such as navigating representation and networking barriers. I also shared key insights on the skills employers seek and the importance of continuous learning and mentorship. It was another and final week at SOC academy, courtesy: CyBlack and LetsDefend. I’m delighted to share that we successfully completed a security solution project using Splunk Cloud to analyze OpenSSH logs and strengthen our security posture. The project involved comprehensive log file analysis, setting up user account management, dashboard creation, and alert configuration. Key findings included the detection of brute-force attacks originating from various global IP addresses, including one flagged as malicious. We also identified a successful login attempt, which was further analyzed to ensure no malicious activities occurred. What we achieved - Analyzed the OpenSSH logs to identify failed and successful login attempts, including potential security threats. -Created a dashboard for real-time monitoring and configured alerts for early threat detection to an administrator -Blocked malicious IPs, strengthened SSH configurations, and improved user management practices. We made few recommendations moving forward (full reccommendations in the report attached) - Proactively update IP blocklists. - Implement least privilege principles. - Conduct regular security drills and reviews. This project highlights the importance of proactive security measures and continuous monitoring in safeguarding our digital environment.
