Our regulatory officer, Noah Tattersall, has recently returned from the Innovate UK Global Business Innovation Programme (GBIP) to Hyderabad and Bengaluru, India. During his visit, he connected with experts and companies addressing the critical issue of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). Throughout the week, Noah visited institutions including Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, ASPIRE BioNEST, IKP Knowledge Park, Centre for Cellular and Molecular Platforms (C-CAMP) and Bangalore Bioinnovation Centre, engaging with experts in the AMR field and exploring innovative solutions. He also showcased the efforts of Cytecom in combating AMR. This trip was a valuable experience, and we are excited about the potential collaborations that may arise from it. Thank you to Innovate UK and FICCI for organising the programme.

So about last night... We teamed up with NatWest and the British Business Bank to deliver the Women Entrepreneur's Pitch Competition - and the pitchers knocked it out the park. At Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce, we know there's still a great big gender gap when it comes to entrepreneurship and investment. So we brought together a room of women entrepreneurs, investors and connected individuals in the enterprise ecosystem to platform and network our region's high potential women led businesses. We had four incredible founders pitching their companies, selected from over 40 applicants: 💡 Magdalena Karlikowska from Cytecom - who have created an a portable, standalone, and easy-to-use device for rapid detection of live bacteria 💡 Christina French from Essench Cosmetic Solutions - who provide a complete service of sustainable and ethical product development to the cosmetics industry from sourcing raw ingredients to manufacture, labelling and packaging 💡 Olivia Simpson from SymbioTex - who have developed sustainably cultivated, compostable seaweed based pellets to replace single use plastics in medical devices such as inhalers 💡 Roksana Kasprzyk from SAFEQUEEN - who have developed a platform for reporting women's harassment incidents within Birmingham venues Congratulations to our winner and "One to Watch" Olivia Simpson - SymbioTex And thank you to our judges Hannah Tapsell Chapman - Mercia Asset Management PLC, Liz Hobster - Midven, Paul Faulkner - RCL Partners for taking on the tough job of selecting the winner. Funded iCASE PhD Studentship! Royal Veterinary College, U. of London Sharon Kendall Yu-Mei Ruby Chang and in partnership with Cytecom THE ROLE OF BACTERIAL MEMBRANE POTENTIAL IN TUBERCULOSIS PERSISTENCE AND REGROWTH The project will investigate the biochemical, genetic, and electrophysiological pathways underlying persistent infections in tuberculosis (TB).  Tuberculosis, caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), is the highest cause of mortality by a single infectious agent and kills 1.5 million people annually. Treatment of TB in humans is with lengthy, toxic, multidrug regimens and the increasing emergence of drug resistant TB is a global concern. Mtb is able to enter a physiological persistent state which is phenotypically resistant to antimicrobials. Persistent states in many bacterial species is associated with a phenotype known as the small colony variant (SCV). The clinical importance of SCVs is highlighted by their isolation from patients with persistent, recurrent infections. SCVs show delayed growth and defects in community behaviours such as biofilm formation and cell-cell signalling. We have recently used CRISPRi to silence a putative haem synthase (HAS) in a non-pathogenic model of Mtb (Mycobacterium smegmatis) and observed a SCV phenotype. In this project we explore this phenotype using a combination of molecular microbiology, electrophysiology, and innovative mathematical modelling. The aim of this project is to investigate persistent phenotypes in TB and measure impacts on global gene expression, membrane potential and quorum sensing behaviours. We hypothesise that silencing of the mycobacterial HAS leads to inhibition of the respiratory chain and a reduction in membrane potential. This reduction in membrane potential inhibits cell to cell communication behaviours and causes a delay in regrowth classically described in SCVs. This project will explore the novel concept that electrical signalling plays a role in allowing bacteria to sense their environment and communicate with one-another. A concept that is gaining traction in model organisms. This project offers training in molecular microbiology such as CRISPRi gene silencing, targeted mutagenesis approaches and global transcriptomics. It offers training in mathematical modelling as neuron-firing models will be applied and modified to interpret changes in bacterial membrane potential in different physiological states. The project offers an exciting 3-month placement with Cytecom, a start-up company with expertise in bacterial electrophysiology. 🎉 Exciting News! Cytecom Receives NIHR i4i FAST Award 🏆 We're thrilled to announce that Cytecom has been awarded the NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research) i4i FAST Award for our cutting-edge project in rapid Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (AST) using our patented optical electrophysiology method. AMR is a global health threat, and our innovative CyteCount platform aims to tackle this issue head-on by providing rapid AST results, reducing inappropriate antibiotic use, and improving patient outcomes. Meet Rachel Hamakim from the University of Leicester, a key collaborator on our project. She's testing whether the technology can be used to detect bacteria and ASTs directly in blood, bringing us one step closer to a future with faster and more effective diagnostics.
