DACB's Nick Hillyard and Kai von Pahlen have successfully secured a Supreme Court judgment in an appeal which provides much needed clarity on the legal position in the construction industry's general approach to collateral warranties.   Kai commented, “We are of course very pleased with the outcome of this appeal for our client, but we also think the Supreme Court judgment is beneficial for the wider construction industry as it has restored certainty to an important area of construction law. As solicitors, we feel privileged that we were able to play a small part in such an important case."   Read more on the Supreme Court decision of Abbey Healthcare (Mill Hill) Limited vs Augusta 2008 LLP (formerly Simply Construct (UK) LLP) [2024] UKSC 23, here:  https://lnkd.in/dSys_gDK

Last week our Early Talent team ran a work experience insights day at our Bristol office as part of our involvement with the 'West of England Legal Early Careers Network' in collaboration with four other law firms as well as the University of Law and the University of the West of England. The day was an opportunity to show students what a legal career could look like as both a lawyer and as a business services professional. Thank you to our Bristol Location Head Ben Daniels for welcoming the students, to Laura Pearce and Amy Nordenlund who shared insights into their current apprentice and trainee roles at DACB, and to our other trainees and apprentices who ran an employment exercise with the students, as well as the colleagues from our IT team who showcased what a career in IT within the legal sector might entail. We were pleased to host NOTWICS's AI breakfast panel at our London offices yesterday morning.   Partner and head of our tech advisory group Tim Ryan joined leading experts Richard Potter, Christopher Hill and George Mensah to discuss all things AI, in collaboration with Christopher Lowe. The event joined together leading AI businesses, with key takeaways from the panel including:   - We are already seeing significant AI development, procurement and implementation across various core client sectors in DACB including health, real estate, insurance and financial services - AI is needed to optimise commercial decision making and that the value of AI is ultimately likely to be in the application, rather than the model - The early stage investment market, whilst slow and uncertain in the recent past, has become very competitive in the past 6 – 9 months - It's not always the technology, rather the environment that the technology is in, which requires focus and builds value - Foundational AI models are not where the bulk of the value will be created and that industry/sector-specific software will have the most impact - The panel was optimistic about things such as business optimisation and revolutionising human interaction, but shared some concerns around AI solely being in the hands of private businesses - Another major concern was the struggle of regulation to keep pace with (and not to stifle) innovation. Clearly compliance is important, but it has already been observed that the EU AI Act, for instance, appears out of sync with some current advancements and horizon-scanning is needed needed to understand the UK approach beyond the imminent general election in the UK   You can view more about our AI offering here: https://lnkd.in/eQwwC2UZ #AI #ArtificialIntelligence
