Great news that the EU has approved the extension to the EIS sunset clause. UK investors and financial advisers will be able to continue to utilise some of the world's most generous tax reliefs, until at least 2035. 🚨 The European Commission has approved the extension to the EIS Sunset Clause The European Commission has confirmed that it will not raise objections to the extension of the EIS and VCTs, deeming it compatible with the internal market under Article 107(3)(c) of the EU Treaty. This step follows extensive discussions between the UK Government and the European Commission, and means the 10-year extension of the sunset clause on EIS and VCTs to 2035 is now closer to being finalised. The extension was initially passed in February as part of the Finance Act 2024, but included a clause stating that “This section comes into force on such day as the Treasury may by regulations appoint.” The UK government's 2022 evaluation, which formed part of the discussions with the European Commission, highlighted the positive impact of the EIS/VCT schemes in incentivising investment, with a majority of investors indicating they would shift their investment strategies without these tax incentives. We are delighted to welcome Dr Gary Tilbrook as the Chief Scientific Officer of LCC. Gary is an experienced medicinal chemist with an in-depth knowledge of drug discovery and development, built from working within the biotech sector for over 25 years. Gary’s experience covers all practical aspects of the drug discovery process from target and hit identification, through to lead optimisation, candidate selection, process chemistry R&D and technical/intellectual property due diligence support for in/out licensing opportunities. Gary made key contributions relating to the pre-clinical, CMC and early clinical development of the ex-Glaxo Wellcome asset GW502056X, the first ultra-short acting injectable benzodiazepine Remimazolam (Byfavo®), now commercialised worldwide. Gary’s breadth of expertise is a great fit for LCC’s ongoing mission of improving access to chirally pure chemical space for NCE discovery and development, and we can’t wait to see what he brings to Team LCC.
