Congratulations to our colleague Brian Garvey, along with, Maria Luisa Mendonça, Maurício Torres, Daniela Stefano, and Fábio Pitta for receiving the 2023 Nevile-Plowman Prize for their outstanding article, "Cultivating space for contemporary resistance in Brazil’s Amazon and Cerrado" (ELRR, 34(4), pp. 825 - 839). The Nevile-Plowman Best Article Prize, established in 2019 by The Economic and Labour Relations Review (ELRR), honours the journal's founding editors, Professors John Nevile and David Plowman. The prize recognises outstanding articles in economics and industrial relations, judged on rigorous research, clear communication, and significant scholarly or policy impact. Our Masters students met up again with students from Quinnipiac University, CT, USA on a study abroad visit to Glasgow completing a course called Psychology in the Workplace. This time we were hosted by the Lightweight Manufacturing Centre (LMC) at the National Manufacturing Institute of Scotland (NMIS) (https://lnkd.in/eTFV-8mi) and took part in a joint workshop - Accessible Automation: Integrating People in Technological Advancements. Many thanks to Lee Pinnell and his team at the LMC for showing us around their work on the Reconfigurable Pilot Line and helping us see think about human-centred issues related to using the technology they’re developing. Thanks also to Jen Remnant and Jed Moore for presenting their work on robotics, AI, accessibility and ethics, and for giving us some ideas on potential collaborations between our WEO and engineering colleagues. We hope our US friends made it back to Connecticut safely and to see them again soon!

Our colleague, Professor Tom Baum, was a contributing researcher and author for Chapter 2 (Strengthening the tourism workforce) in this annual OECD publication, which addresses the role of government policy and private sector collaboration in building resilience in a workforce badly impacted by the global pandemic. Key take-aways from the chapter include addressing working conditions and low pay in the industry and the imperative to recognise the needs of tourism workers in wider economic and community development plans, particularly with reference to housing, transport, education and child care. The chapter highlights the need for tourism SMEs to develop capacity with respect to digital transformation in the sector. A key recommendation in support of policy going forward is to improve the quality and comparability of data on tourism employment across the tourism sectors of OECD member countries.

Congrats to Anna Bennett who was this year’s winner of the Lord Forte Prize! The Lord Forte Prize is awarded to the undergraduate student with the highest overall marks in Hospitality and Tourism Management for this academic session. Anna received the prize of £2500 alongside a trophy and certificate. She said, "I am a very practical learner and the hands-on learning experiences I have been able to partake in within Hospitality and Tourism have really been what has inspired my learning and academic progression. Last month, our colleague, Tom Baum was invited as Co-Chair and Keynote Speaker to Tourism State of the Art III in Tenerife, hosted by Universidad de La Laguna and with 250 delegates from 18 countries in attendance. Tourism Sate of the Art I was hosted by the University of Strathclyde in 1994 to celebrate 50 years of tourism and hospitality education and research in the Business School. This was followed by Tourism Sate of the Art II in 2004, again hosted in Glasgow. Universidad de La Laguna requested ‘hosting rights’ to the conference in association with the University of Strathclyde and UN Tourism. Such was the impact of the event on stakeholders from international tourism agencies as well as from the public and private sectors in the Canaries that Tourism State of the Art IV is already in planning for 2034!! You can see from the photographs, Tom received a special thanks for his dedication to tourism education. The personal acknowledgement presented to Tom was a total surprise. Congratulations Tom!

My name is Jannie Kjær Jørgensen, I am an MSc Occupational Psychology student at the Department of Work, Employment and Organisation at Strathclyde University. As part of my dissertation, I am exploring the barriers to inclusion in relation to disability within the UK workplace and examining how perceptions of fairness influence these barriers.
