We support ministers in leading the nation’s health and social care to help people live more independent healthier lives
About us
The Department of Health and Social Care helps people to live better for longer. We lead, shape and fund health and care in England, making sure people have the support, care and treatment they need, with the compassion, respect and dignity they deserve. The Department of Health and Social care sets the direction and coordinates action across the health and care system: public health and adult social care as well as the NHS. We create national policies and legislation, providing the long term vision and ambition to meet current and future challenges, and act as a global leader in health and care policy. We work with our partners to ensure everyone can access the health and care they need, from supporting people to have the best start in life, to staying in good health and, where that might not be possible, supporting people to live as independently as they can and ensuring they receive the best possible care. We want to instil a culture that values compassion, dignity and the highest quality of care. We support the integrity of the system by providing funding, assuring the delivery and continuity of services, and accounting to Parliament. We champion innovation and improvement by supporting research and technology, promoting honesty, openness and transparency. Above all, we encourage staff in every health and care organisation, including our own, to understand and learn from people’s experience of health and care and to apply this to everything we do.

On World Suicide Prevention Day, Baroness Gillian Merron visited Nafsiyat Intercultural Therapy Centre, a charity which has been providing intercultural therapy since 1983. They offer short-term therapy in over 20 different languages, to ensure people from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds receive sensitive and tailored care. Nafsiyat is one of 79 organisations supported by the £10 million Suicide Prevention Grant Fund, which is part of our broader strategy to reduce suicide rates across England. This grant helps voluntary, community, and social enterprises to offer vital services, including support for hard-to-reach populations, helping to prevent suicides and save lives. Suicide prevention is a top priority for the government. We are committed to bringing down waiting times, expanding mental health services, and recruiting 8,500 new mental health workers who will be trained to support people at risk.

Watch Public Health Minister Andrew Gwynne describe how his grandson developed RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) and ended up in intensive care at Alder Hey Children's Hospital when he was just a few weeks old. Stories like Lyle's are the reason why there's a new NHS vaccination to protect babies and older people against RSV. You'll be able to get the vaccine if: ➡️ you're 28 weeks pregnant or more ➡️ you're aged 75 to 79 The minister is encouraging everyone who is eligible to come forward for the jab, including pregnant women, saying: "I don’t want you to lose your precious baby as we almost did with Lyle." Following the launch of the third iteration of Active Design in May 2023, we joined forces with the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities to run a series of eight site-based regional workshops. They set out to improve knowledge of urban design and the planning system amongst public health and physical activity professionals, with a particular focus on how the built environment can affect health outcomes.
