The Dounreay Green Network, supported by leadership team member, Craig Brown volunteered a day of their time at Dunnet Community Forest. The team worked on an area of trees to thin out the canopy, allowing light to come through. This promotes the growth of other plants, lichen, and fungus on the forest floor, which is beneficial to wildlife. Thinning of a forest canopy can improve the stability and strength of stems and roots. The forest has been community managed since 2002 and in community ownership since 2020. #volunteerDay #natureConservation #forestConservation
NRS Dounreay
Oil and Gas
Dounreay is responsible for the safe and secure clean-up of the Dounreay nuclear site.
About us
Dounreay was the UK’s centre of fast reactor research and development from 1955 until 1994 and is now Scotland’s largest nuclear clean-up and demolition project. Dounreay is a division of Nuclear Restoration Services. This was where some of the nation’s leading scientists and engineers experimented with plutonium, uranium and other metals to give Britain the knowledge to generate electricity using a more advanced type of nuclear reactor. Their research and development is now complete. The equipment and materials they used to gain this knowledge is being packed up and the environment restored by a new generation of staff skilled in nuclear clean-up. Today, Dounreay is part of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority Group and a site of construction, demolition and waste management, all of it designed to return the site to as near as practicable its original condition.

A reactors peer group from across the NDA group and CNL in Canada met for the second time recently at Dounreay. They discussed key themes, challenges and opportunities they jointly face, which included developing skills, retaining the workforce and innovative decommissioning techniques. Reactors Programme Director, Craig Brown said: “The group was enthusiastic around the similar challenges and committed to work together to find common solutions. Although the various reactors are significantly different in design the challenges and opportunities for decommissioning are very familiar.” #Decommissioning #Collaboration #NDAgroup

#FlashbackFriday to 1955 and the building of the iconic Dounreay Fast Reactor dome. This image shows 2 of the 300 metal plates used to construct the dome being lifted into position before being welded into place. They welded 2 of the plates together in a workshop which halved the number of lifts the team had to make. #NuclearHistory #EngineeringFeats #HistoricSites
