Celebrating 12 years since the firm first opened its doors, here’s a little reflection on that journey from our managing partner…

Today marks the start of year 13 for East Devon Law LLP and what a journey the last 12 years have been from starting my own law firm on 1July 2012 working from home to having 2 offices, one in Devon and one in Oxfordshire and building a successful well respected firm. I have been so fortunate to have been supported on that journey by some wonderful colleagues and mentors without whom I would never have got so far. My greatest support is from my family especially my amazing wife Adele Hunt who has been there through all the highs and lows, my Dad Derek Hunt and daughter Victoria Hunt who have all worked tirelessly to support me and my vision for providing affordable, accessible legal advice for all and putting the client first. It was a great honour to receive the Highly Commended Award for best client experience at the recent Devon & Somerset Law Society Awards ceremony and despite being a small firm proved that we can still be amongst the best in our community. A huge vote of thanks to all those people who have helped us and supported us along the way especially our staff especially Anna Garland who runs our Oxfordshire office and my business partner Steven Carman and of course all our lovely clients who have helped build our practice by recommending others to us. Always looking forward we are developing some new services and ideas to support our clients, investing in new systems with Smokeball UK and building our team with a new member to join us this month. Onwards and upwards to keep our mission and vision to help and support our clients and build a better future 🍾

Well my most demanding assignment this year is on- Grandad duty with the family in the Yorkshire Dales. I’ve been introduced to a whole new world of Bluey, Octanoughts and Roar. Plus a very excited and loud granddaughter who enjoys lots of cuddles and outdoor fun. Out of office is on and the whole office shut for the week to give all our hardworking staff a proper break. Happy Easter 🐣 to all, normal service will return on 8th April #proudgrandparent

Starting a new charity-why do it? My lovely friend Christianne Ireland had an amazing father in motor racing legend Innes Ireland, his career was not only in motor racing but in his later years in motoring journalism. Sadly Innes died too young, but not before he had helped and mentored many young drivers including James Hunt. We spent some time discussing how we could use the legacy of Innes’s career to create an opportunity for young people from all backgrounds to learn new skills and have the confidence to engage at all levels in the world of motorsport. Whether that be in journalism, photography, engineering, logistics, pit crew or even behind the wheel we wanted to use our connections to help promote and provide those opportunities. The energy and enthusiasm of Christianne has driven this project and helped drive many connections from the motorsport world to pledge help and support. The Trustees have been selected based on their knowledge and skills and the Charity commission application is in after a lot of hard work and behind the scenes support from the team at Unity. Why I’m posting this now is to invite any of our collective contacts from the motorsport community to join us and offer help and support with the charity and its aims, whether as a mentor, coach, sponsor or someone who can possibly offer an opportunity to one of the young candidates selected. At this stage we are building the support network ahead of the official launch but already have a growing network of support from all areas. If you can join us and offer support please either comment or message me and thank you to all who already have pledged their help Liz Williams CIHM Hagerty UK HCVA: Historic and Classic Vehicles Alliance Andrew Noakes Adele Hunt Christianne Ireland Guy Loveridge Please feel free to share and direct any offers of assistance to myself or Christianne and thank you.#charities #journeytosuccess #motorsport #motorsports #mentoringmatters #engineering #racingdriver

I consider it an honour to be a Trustee and to be able to use my skills and knowledge for the benefit of others. This was something planted into my psyche at an early age. I attended a Roman Catholic secondary school and from day one we were taught the principles of service above self during our RE studies and did weekly “community service “ with either elderly people or disabled people in the local community for the entire 5 years at the school. At age 16 when I left school and embarked on my legal career I started working with local charities and spent 14 years helping Guide Dogs and then Lewis Manning Hospice both with fundraising and then as a Trustee for the hospice. Following my move to Devon I continued my work with local charities Devon Air Ambulance and Hospiscare as well as Veterans with Dogs and Combat Stress all causes close to my heart. I can honestly say that since 16 there hasn’t been a year when I have not helped or worked for at least one charity and generally there have been at least two. What do I get from this you ask - an enormous sense of satisfaction that the knowledge and skills I have can help others and do good. This principal is ingrained in my own firm East Devon Law LLP and we give a lot of time and money to support local causes and charities as well as community grants to local groups who need that help. I think back to my old Cub Scout promise that I made in the 1970’s and draw inspiration from that: I promise that I will do my best, to do my duty to God and the Queen, to help other people and to keep the Cub Scout Law. The wording may have changed over the years but the principles behind it haven’t and I would encourage others to consider

Charity Lead - CILEX Foundation at Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEX). Helping good causes thrive, through Strategic and Operational delivery.

Trustee week 2023 - Another day of celebrations and awareness raising, another chance to sing the praises of some great Trustees. Sometimes you meet people who seem to know everything and everyone in their field. They are so embedded in their work that they live and breathe it. But rarely do you meet people who put that knowledge to such good use. CILEX Foundation Trustee Ian Hunt is the prime example of giving back, professionally. A third generation CILEX Lawyer, Ian set up East Devon Law and is an experienced Private Client lawyer. He is active in his local legal network, and supports other local charities too. All of which would be enough to make Ian a cracking Trustee. But what we really appreciate about Ian is his kindness. Ian really cares. He cares about his clients, his legal and charity colleagues, his fellow Lawyers in the wider CILEX community (he has been a member of the CILEX Professional Board for several years now) and now he cares about those who are helped by the CILEX Foundation too. Ian, along with fellow Trustee Gus, are on our review panel for welfare and support grant claims. Ian’s knock-out combination of experience and kindness mean that those approaching the CILEX Foundation for support in times of financial difficulty are treated with the upmost care and respect. Life in the Legal Sector is tough, and having passionate Trustees like Ian mean that the CILEX Foundation can make sure that every CILEX Lawyer or student has the best chance of success, no matter the challenges they face. Are you passionate about encourage diversity and widening opportunities in the legal sector? We are on the look out for an independent Trustee. Legal sector experience isn’t strictly necessary – we have Ian for that! Contact me for more information. #trusteeweek #trustee #cilex #charity

Fellow CILEX members here is a quick reminder of your last chance to submit your response to the consultation on changing regulator. We would encourage everyone who is a member whether student, paralegal, graduate or fellow to do so as it affects YOU 💯 It’s no good ignoring it and saying later you did not have a say so read the short article below by Emma Davies follow the link to Yanthe Richardson article about the SRA proposals and then complete the CILEX consultation before Saturday 5th November. As a CILEX firm regulated by the SRA and not CRL we have found it a positive experience, easy to access help and advice, simple and cheaper annual renewal process, lower PI Insurance premiums and no issues when dealing with financial providers. All of our partners and fee earners are proud CILEX members and don’t get treated any differently than solicitors by the SRA so that change of entity regulator was a positive experience for our firm if that helps any other entity owners worried about the proposed changes.

What an honour to be included in the guest list for the opening of the legal year on Monday and to meet the new Lady Chief Justice on the day of her inauguration. It was also amazing that CILEX could extend that opportunity to two young inspirational lady members Paige Gouldthorpe and Gemma Adams who have achieved so much in their careers and give them truly a day to remember.

There are days that will always be remembered and this was one of them. I was honoured to be invited to represent CILEX and The CILEx Foundation with our President Emma Davies who is a fellow Trustee and the chair of the CILEX board Professor Chris Bones to attend the service at Westminster Abbey for the opening of the legal year. Also attended where two amazing women members of CILEX advocate Gemma Adams and private client lawyer Paige Gouldthorpe who have both been an inspiration for many others with what they have and are achieving in their careers. Together we witnessed history in the making as Lady Carr, the First Lady Chief Justice in 800 years attended her first official engagement. Lady Carr champions diversity and equality in the legal profession, the CILEX route into law provides the opportunity and support to achieve that no matter what your background and education is and The CILEx Foundation provides financial help and support for those who find the cost of training a barrier through its scholarship and bursaries scheme. When I left school at 16 with a few O levels to embark on my journey into law never did I imagine that I would end up as a managing partner of a law firm, neither did I anticipate being able to train to become an assistant coroner, but above all I never dreamed of being in Westminster Abbey with the top Judges and lawyers in the country. All of this was made possible by CILEX and a lot of hard work and some self belief. I’m truly honoured to be on the professional board now to help shape the future of our professional body and equally to be a Trustee of the Foundation Charity helping others achieve their dreams and goals. Believe in yourself, help others along the way and work hard and you can achieve anything. I’m very proud to be a CILEX Lawyer and looking forward to celebrating the achievements of my fellow members in just over a week at Graduation. Meanwhile if you feel inspired then please link up with 3 inspirational ladies Emma Davies Gemma Adams and Paige Gouldthorpe who are simply fabulous ambassadors and follow their passion and journey for providing the best legal services. #Proud2bCILEX
