At Encounter Edu, we've been aware of the effects of ocean warming on ecosystems such as the Arctic and the coral reef through our work over the years, but it wasn't until we started on the Ocean & Climate and Ocean Heroes resources with the Convex Seascape Survey that the true scale became apparent. The ocean absorbs over 90% of the excess heat from global warming. This has been a massive 350 to 400 zetajoules of warming since the 1950s (a zeta joule is 10 ^ 21 joules). To put this into context, the energy of the first atomic bomb dropped was 63 trillion joules. This means that the heat energy absorbed by the ocean since the 1950s is equivalent to over 5.5 billion atomic bombs, or an average of about 2.5 bombs every second. This rate has increased in recent decades with estimates that we are adding the heat energy of between 3 and 5 atomic bombs to the ocean every second. It's terrifying but important. We're proud to present three new curriculum-aligned units developed in collaboration with Convex Seascape Survey and world-leading scientists from ExeterMarine. Ocean & Climate for KS3 Science and Geography, and Ocean Heroes for KS2 offer comprehensive, engaging, and free resources for teaching essential aspects of ocean science, climate change, and sustainability. Ocean Heroes | Ages 7-11 / KS2 | Cross-curricular is a primary-level unit that introduces ocean and sustainability topics, emphasising blue carbon habitats' importance and how the ocean can be an ally in tackling climate change. Ocean & Climate |Ages 11-14 / KS3 | Science is a lower-secondary unit that covers vital topics such as the carbon cycle, ocean biodiversity, climate change impacts, and ocean acidification, enhancing students' understanding and science capital. Ocean & Climate | Ages 11-14 / KS3 | Geography explores ocean and climate change connections, the role of blue carbon habitats, and the ocean's potential as a climate ally. As the ocean absorbs over 25% of manmade carbon emissions and 90% of excess heat from global warming, it's crucial to equip students with knowledge about these topics and learn how the ocean is affected by climate change and can be a source of hope in tackling the issue. Our response through these resources balances addressing climate and ocean crises with robust science, climate optimism, and tools for young people to advocate for greater change.
