Reaching net-zero carbon emissions from the harder-to-abate sectors is technically & financially possible by mid-century
About us
We know that economic growth and climate action can be achieved together. The Energy Transitions Commission was convened to help identify pathways for change in our energy systems to ensure both better growth and a better climate. This is inspired by the work of the Global Commission on the Economy and Climate and its flagship project the New Climate Economy. The Commissioners bring a remarkable range of viewpoints and extraordinary depth of experience. They come from across the energy spectrum, including investors, incumbent energy companies, industry disruptors, equipment suppliers, non-profit organizations, advisors, and academics. Some have sat at high-level negotiating tables on climate change deals. What they share is a progressive attitude to reforming the energy system. We aim to accelerate change towards low-carbon energy systems that enable robust economic development and limit the rise in global temperature to well below 2 degrees Celsius. We will provide decision-makers with insights and options for action at local and/or sector level. This will stem from objective research and wide engagement with actors in the energy system. We hope you find the work of the Commission interesting and insightful.

ETC Chair Adair Turner recently discussed the need for the next round of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to reflect technical potential of low-carbon technology and reinforce existing progress to limit the impact of climate change in Global Association of Risk Professionals (GARP)’s Climate Risk Podcast. The conversation focused on the ETC’s latest insights briefing #CredibleContributions calling for governments to prioritise delivering high-ambition NDCs that act as clear roadmaps for implementation. Governments can and should at least triple ambition in the next round of Nationally Determined Contributions – the so-called “NDCs 3.0” due at COP30 in Brazil - if we are to limit the impact of climate change. Rapid progress in the low-carbon transition is being made. Cost reductions are enabling mature clean energy technologies to scale up faster than anticipated. Projected deployment of wind and solar PV is expected to more than double by 2035 compared to 2023 levels, and in the same period, deployment of EVs expected to quadruple globally. If governments reflect this technological progress as well as existing policy commitments made at COP28 in the next round of NDCs, overall ambition levels could almost triple. COP28 saw nearly 200 countries make ambitious commitments to triple renewable energy capacity and double energy efficiency improvements by 2030, and to transition away from fossil fuels in the energy system. But pledges must now be turned into action. Even with #triplingambition in “NDCs 3.0”, more action is still needed to put the world on a 1.5°C-aligned pathway. Faster progress will be required in halting deforestation, phasing out coal from the power system and accelerating project delivery in hard-to-abate industry and transport. Industry recognises the opportunity in the next round of NDCs and calls on governments to prioritise delivering high-ambition NDCs which will provide certainty, unlock investment and accelerate technology deployment. Adair Turner, Chair of the ETC welcomed the launch of #Mission2025 this week at the Climate Innovation Forum as part of London Climate Action Week. Mission 2025 is a high-ambition coalition calling on governments to move even faster by delivering 1.5°C-aligned climate plans and outcomes by #COP30 in Brazil. The coalition comes less than a year ahead of a crucial February 2025 deadline, when countries are required to submit enhanced climate plans – known as Nationally Determined Contributions – to the United Nations for the period 2025-2035. This initiative responds to analysis by the ETC, showing that if governments reflect existing commitments and the latest technological progress, countries can collectively almost triple ambition – and bring the world on a 2°C pathway, accelerating climate progress in the right direction. Thank you to our partner Groundswell for their role in convening this coalition to foster cooperation and practical solutions needed to achieve climate goals. Some want us to believe the transition is impossible. It’s actually happening faster than we think. What’s more, 💼Businesses want this: it makes economic sense. 💸Investors want this: it makes financial sense. 👫🏾We, the people, want this: it makes common sense. Join us on a decade-defining mission to secure the success of our economies and the well-being of our people and planet. It’s time for our leaders to lead. #Mission2025 #LCAW2024 Mission 2025 responds to analysis by the Energy Transitions Commission, showing that rapidly falling costs of clean technologies and proven feasibility of other solutions mean that countries can collectively almost triple ambition – and bring the world on a 2°C pathway – merely by factoring in the commitments made and progress achieved since previous plans were submitted in 2021. Today, Systemiq is convening leading experts from the ‘transition materials’ ecosystem for a practical and ambitious roundtable discussion focused on 'Circularity for Transition Materials: Scaling up Recovery and Recycling'. Hosted during #LondonClimateActionWeek, the event will focus on de-risking the supply of the critical materials that underpin the transition to a net zero economy. It builds on Systemiq’s collaboration with the Energy Transitions Commission, which emphasises the crucial role of circularity in meeting growing demand for transition materials while minimising environmental and social impacts. Speakers include: Ita Kettleborough - Energy Transitions Commission, Patrick Schröder - Chatham House, as well as Dr. Niklas Niemann and Ben Dixon - Systemiq.
