About us
The Energy Institute (EI) is the chartered professional membership body for people who work across the world of energy. Our purpose is creating a better energy future for our members and society by accelerating a just global energy transition to net zero. We do this by: -Attracting, developing and equipping the diverse future energy workforce -Informing energy decision-making through convening expertise and advice -Enabling industry and consumers to make energy lower carbon, safer and more efficient A registered charity, incorporated by Royal Charter in 2003, the EI is licensed by the Engineering Council (UK) to offer Chartered, Incorporated and Engineering Technician status to engineers, and by the Society for the Environment to award Chartered Environmentalist status. We are also unique in granting Chartered Energy Manager status. The EI was set up in 2003 as a result of a merger between the Institute of Petroleum (IP) and the Institute of Energy (InstE). Both Institutes had a proud and distinguished heritage developed over many years supporting their particular energy sectors. Increasingly these sectors have converged, creating an integrated global energy market which has been mirrored by the development of the Energy Institute - established to address both the depth and breadth of the subject. Today , the EI is home to a range of collaborative initiatives, including the G+ Global Offshore Wind Health and Safety Organisation, SafetyOn and POWERful Women. We host the annual International Energy Week, EI Awards, publish New Energy World Magazine and the Energy Barometer, and provide the Toolbox web app helping the energy workforce learn lessons from incidents and get home safe.

📉Peak uncertainty: The peak oil demand and energy transition debate Recent reports suggest global oil demand has peaked or will peak before 2030. However, OPEC+ disputes these forecasts, highlighting a significant divide in outlooks. Despite differing views, both sides agree on the key issues: the role of emerging economies and the tension between adding new energy sources versus substituting existing ones. 📚Read more in #NewEnergyWorld, the magazine of the #EnergyInstitute: https://ow.ly/wSnG50SSKYL

💵The critical role of finance in delivering just transition pathways The question of a just transition isn’t about choosing between a just or unjust path. It’s about how we define, discuss and implement justice in our shift to low GHG emissions and climate-resilient development. Policymakers face the complex task of determining whose justice is being impacted and in what ways. This is crucial for implementing effective climate policies, explain Tiffanie Chan, Policy Analyst, Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change & the Environment, and Jodi-Ann Wang, Global Policy Analyst at the Just Transition Finance Lab, emphasising the indispensable role of finance in this process. 🔗Read more in #NewEnergyWorld, the magazine of the #EnergyInstitute: https://ow.ly/43Fw50SSKKk

We are developing new guidelines alongside the Energy Institute to simplify decarbonisation economics for the upstream oil and gas sector, continuing our collaboration to provide valuable industry insights. These guidelines will demystify decarbonisation economics, helping industry professionals better understand carbon costs and adopt metrics that support effective GHG reduction projects. While focused on the UK North Sea, this report will be designed with a global perspective, serving as a key resource for future research and decision-making to ensure decarbonisation goals align with financial realities and industry standards.
