Over the weekend, Sebastian Hallensleben helpfully shared an update on the important work that the CEN and CENELEC JTC21 working group have been doing to prepare the harmonised standards required under the EU AI Act. A copy of that update, showing the key work items and their progress status, is attached to this post. These harmonised standards matter - they will be critical to the interpretation, implementation and enforcement of the EU AI Act - and it seems as though the team is making good progress. At Enzai, we are pleased to see that these standards are aligning with international best practices such as those prepared by ISO - International Organization for Standardization. We are also pleased to note that many of these standards (including the one on AI Management Systems, ISO 42001) are built into our technology so that our customers can stay well ahead of the regulatory curve. Will the new UK government follow the broad approaches to AI regulation taken by the EU and Colorado or continue with the previous government's light-touch, principles based approach? Much of that will depend on the recommendations expected from Matt Clifford, Chair of Advanced Research And Invention Agency in the next few weeks. California S.B. 1047 seeks to subject the most powerful AI models to significant testing and reporting requirements. Geoffrey Hinton and Yoshua Bengio support it. Meta, Anthropic, Hugging Face, Fei-Fei Li and Rep. Nancy Pelosi oppose it.   With recent amendments to address concerns, S.B. 1047 needs to pass in California’s Assembly by August 31. Ryan Donnelly walked a packed out room through the core principles of AI governance, and explained how a strong AI governance programme is essential to ensure that organisations can make the most of the opportunity. How, specifically, are Gen AI models misused in practice? This is a question organizations and policymakers often ask as they put AI governance in place and anticipate future risks.   Recent research from Deepmind, Jigsaw and Google.org addressed this topic and categorized Gen AI misuse tactics, goals and strategies. The research was informed by academic research and an analysis of about 200 incidents of misuse, reported between January 2023 and March 2024.
