What can I do to make sure I am prepared to talk about this summer riots with my pupils? How can I support teachers to do so? These can be challenging tasks. How to bring to the classroom honest conversations on Islamophobia, racism and xenophobia? How promoting these conversations making sure that everyone feels safe? What to do to develop critical thinking skills in young people? It can help: Being clear on the school's values and the school position on racism and on any form of discrimination. Actively listening to concerns students may arise and validating their feelings. Involving students in planning activities to promote an anti-hate culture. Check out the full EqualiTeach guidance my colleagues Candice West and Rebecca Pottinger have prepared for you; you will also find there additional resources you can download from our website. If you saw it, so did your students… After a summer of racially motivated, xenophobic, and Islamophobic violence, students may come back to school feeling unsettled. It’s vital to create a supportive environment where they can discuss their feelings, understand the facts, and develop critical thinking skills. Explore our latest guidance and video for tips on how to navigate these important conversations with young people. Link in comments.

Managers, your team needs you now more than ever. Daily news updates of far-right riots in the UK, fueled by racism, xenophobia, and Islamophobia, are deeply distressing and can impact our mood and well-being at work. As a manager, how can you address these issues and support your team? ☑️Acknowledge the issue and check in with your colleagues to see how they are feeling and offer support. ☑️Be flexible with working hours or locations. Some may feel unsafe commuting or need time off for self-care. ☑️Signpost colleagues to helplines or employee assistant programmes. ☑️Encourage people to speak-up, challenge and report racism, xenophobia, and Islamophobia. ☑️Consider making a donation to a local charity actively working towards tackling racism, Islamophobia or xenophobia (like us!) These are tough times, but by taking these steps, you can create a more inclusive and supportive workplace.
