🌟 2023 was Esmée's highest ever funding year, totalling £73.3m 🌟 We provided £57.3m in grants, which includes £48.3m in 227 main grants, and £7.4m for a Cost of Living Award to many of the organisations we support. Our work using social investment as a mechanism to support new impact-first business and investment models has grown to £12.9m, the most we have ever approved in one year since our first investment in 1999. We also made two new impact investments, totalling £2m. We updated our Investment Policy Statement, creating dual objectives for our portfolio going forward: financial return and sustainability. This recognises both the future risks of unsustainable investments but also the future opportunities in emerging and sustainable business models. "One of the main privileges as a Foundation is our ability to learn from and work alongside the very best of people, communities and organisations dedicated to economic, social and environmental justice. We can provide enabling or catalytic support, we can absorb some of the risk and we can help in amplifying their work, but the expertise, bravery and commitment is theirs." Brilliant to see 'Community right to buy' introduced as part of the English Devolution Bill 🎉 This will be transformational for communities by giving local people power to make the places where they live work better for them. Huge congrats to everyone involved in campaigning for this 🙌
🏚 🏫 Ever looked around your neighbourhood and wondered about those empty shops, pubs, and community spaces? 🌟 They could be brought to life through the 'Community Right to Buy' announced in this week's King's Speech! As part of the English Devolution Bill, this legislation is set to enable more local communities to take ownership of valued community assets... ...and it could change your neighbourhood more than you think! All over the country (see https://lnkd.in/eqeNYMuH), different community-led groups are giving spaces a new lease of life to help local people live affordably, sustainably and together. Whether that's arts and music venues, pubs, reuse and repair hubs, community kitchens, youth and sports clubs, local markets, co-working spaces, or genuinely affordable housing... 📢 Shout-out to the fantastic organisations and individuals who have been tirelessly campaigning for a Right to Buy AND those on the ground demonstrating that community-led property works... We're Right Here, Locality, Community Land Trust, Power to Change, Annoushka Deighton, The Architectural Heritage Fund, Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF), Nick Plumb, Nudge Community Builders, Hannah Sloggett, Wendy Hart, Naomi Rubbra, Stir to Action, Plunkett UK, Will Brett, New Local , Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, Cooperatives UK, Makespace Oxford, Historic Coventry Trust, Hastings Commons, New Economics Foundation and many, many more 🙌 There’s still a lot of work ahead: ensuring the details of the bill are right and that communities are truly able to steward these spaces for the long term. This could make a huge difference to communities that have had to put up with neglected empty buildings for years. Proud to be part of the We're Right Here campaign and so many networks across the country that have been calling for this. We're ready to show what a difference this can make in #Plymouth alongside Plymouth Culture, Plymouth Social Enterprise Network, Plymouth Octopus POP ideas and others. Thank you to all the brilliant national funders, networks and advocates that listen to communities like ours, bring voices together and make change happen. Success is in the detail, and the change that actually happens as a result. Let's keep going! It's just a single bullet point in an online pdf... but it means A LOT. Today, as part of the King's Speech, the Government announced that it would introduce a Community Right to Buy – a key ask of We're Right Here. That means those who have fought tooth and nail for years to try to save the buildings, land and spaces they love – so that these precious assets can continue to be enjoyed by local people – will now have the law on their side. It means more of the pubs, clubs, shops and meeting places we all so desperately need in our neighbourhoods might be retained. It means more coming together, more good times, a better life. I'm so pleased, and proud of everyone involved. There is lots to do (isn't there always). But for now, we can celebrate just a little. 📢 Calling on all organisations supporting women and girls 📢 Rosa Fund, the UK Fund for Women and Girls wants YOU to have your say! They are running a large-scale survey to understand more about the current issues that affect the sector and the women and girls it supports. They want to learn what the future of the women and girls sector might look like and what the opportunities and challenges might be. The results of the survey will help them to understand more about the sector and what it needs to be sustainable. It will provide essential information on funding, staffing and volunteers, demand and wider sector concerns. The survey takes 15 to 20 minutes to complete and you can pause it at any time and come back to it. ➡ Take the survey: https://bit.ly/3KQ3SAs 📅 Closing date: 24 July 2024

Agenda Alliance is glad to welcome Anneliese Dodds and Bridget Phillipson to their appointments as Minsiters for Women and Equalities. Whilst we’re disappointed that Labour has not appointed a standalone Secretary of State for Women and Girls, we look forward to working with them both to help meet the needs of women and girls at the sharpest end of inequality. As part of our work as Learning Partners for The Listening Fund, we’ve been helping grantees reflect on the last 5 years of deepening their listening to young people. Using this evaluative process as a starting point, we’ve now published “Learning Journeys in Listening”: short, accessible and honest accounts of partners’ experiences in listening that we hope many organisations and practitioners can learn from. The accounts set out why the organisation set out to deepen their listening, what they tried and tested, what worked or didn’t, and the impact stronger listening practice had on their organisation and the young people they work with. You can find the first three in this series - from CAREFREE - FOSTERING INDEPENDENCE CORNWALL, The Foyer Federation and The Mix Charity - at the top of the Listening Fund’s resources page: https://lnkd.in/egwk3Epa And if you’re pressed for time, here’s a blog that summarises the lessons learned: https://lnkd.in/eKZFYwWn Please share the Learning Journeys with anyone you know who may find them useful, and let us know what you think of them! [The Listening Fund is funded by The Blagrave Trust BBC Children in Need The National Lottery Community Fund Esmée Fairbairn Foundation The Tudor Trust and led by Edd Fry. Sarah Rose led the evaluative processes with grantees on which the Learning Journeys were based.]
