Sarah Morcom studied MSc Marine Vertebrate Ecology and Conservation with us and graduated in 2021. She is now a Fisheries Observer for The Centre for Fisheries, Environment and Aquaculture Science (Cefas). “I enjoyed the strong practical elements of the course. I felt even with Covid I got a lot of chances to expand my field skills. The highlight for me was definitely the weeks of boat trips; we got to improve our ID skills at sea and a visit to Lundy island to see the seabirds. Having the opportunity to work with IoSIFCA and Natural England for my masters project was brilliant as well. The best thing about studying at the Penryn Campus of the University of Exeter is the staff. The lecturers all go above and beyond to support you. They really are exceptional. “I chose to work in fisheries because I like a challenge. Take part in the National Health Snapshot Study! Researchers at the University of Exeter need your help to better understand the health effects of recreational visits to freshwater locations in the UK. We hope that the findings from this study will provide much needed information on the health risks of water pollution. They are looking for volunteers who recently visited rivers, lakes, or quarries, as well as volunteers who did not participate in water-based recreation (comparison group) to complete a short online questionnaire (10-20 minutes) about their health. Volunteers must be: - Permanent residents of the UK - Aged 16 or over Should you decide to take part, you will be asked to complete an online survey (about 10 minutes), which will inquire about your health, diet and behaviour. Just published! Molly Margaret Kressler’s work from the 2023 FSBI Symposium dives into the challenges of predicting fish distributions in a changing climate. Molly and her colleagues identified 25 critical questions across five key themes, from physiology to ecosystem impacts, to guide future research and management. As climate change reshapes marine and aquatic environments, their findings highlight the urgent need for coordinated efforts to protect fish populations. Meet Mara Fischer! We sat down with Mara to ask her why she’s so fascinated with the ocean, what she’s working on, and what she most enjoys about fieldwork! Q: Why are you so fascinated by the ocean? A: I was lucky to spend many summers at the Baltic Sea and to learn to scuba dive at a young age which undoubtedly contributed to my fascination for the ocean. As part of my undergraduate degree in Ecological and Environmental Sciences at the University of Edinburgh, I got to spend one year studying in Sydney at the University of New South Wales. It was here that I discovered my interest in marine ecology and conservation and decided to pursue this further through a Master’s degree in Marine Environmental Management at the University of Exeter. Q: What are you working on? A: I am part of the team that looks at the role of marine life and biodiversity in sediment carbon storage. As part of that, we are investigating how protection from human disturbances such as bottom trawling can promote healthy seafloor communities and whether that in turn leads to higher sediment carbon storage. Q: What do you enjoy about fieldwork? Yesterday saw us bidding farewell to Lauren Storer as Project Co-ordinator for ExeterMarine as she heads to a tropical island to work with sea turtles. She will be sadly missed as she has had a major impact while here at the University of Exeter feeding into research and education as well as supporting the work of University of Exeter Centre for Ecology and Conservation and helping launch the Graduate School of Environment and Sustainability, University of Exeter Thank you Lauren! #MarineBiologist #ExeterMarine #MarineBiology #SeaTurtles

The Poo-Sticks study aims to determine whether river and lake swimmers are at a higher risk of carrying antibiotic-resistant bacteria compared to the general public. The study seeks to establish potential links between exposure to faecally-polluted waters and colonisation of the gut with antibiotic-resistant bacteria. They’re close to hitting their target for freshwater swimmers - now they need to understand the baseline levels of these bacteria in the general population. Non-swimmers—those who rarely swim in rivers, lakes, or the sea (once a month or less)—are crucial for this aspect of the research. Their participation will help them establish a baseline for the carriage of antibiotic-resistant E. coli in individuals who are not regularly exposed to natural waters. Participants in the Poo-Sticks study can request a Faecal Sample Collection kit online. The kit includes all necessary materials and information, along with a pre-paid, pre-addressed postal box for easy sample return to the lab at the Environment and Sustainability Institute on Penryn Campus.
