💦 Lithium extraction uses a lot of water: approx 2 million litres per metric ton of lithium. Miners drill a hole in salt flats and pump salty, mineral-rich brine to the surface. After many months, the water evaporates, leaving behind a mix of manganese, potassium, borax and lithium salts which is then filtered and placed into another evaporation pool. 👉After between 12 and 18 months of this process, the mixture is filtered sufficiently that lithium carbonate can be extracted. 🔋Sodium doesn't face these challenges. ➡️ Read more: https://www.rfr.bz/lmelfkt #sustainabliity #lithium #sodium

🚒 Each year, Essex Fire and Rescue Service focuses on one area of "top-up" training for its crews. This year, a new course is being introduced: How to deal with electric vehicle fires. 🧪 EV fires also create a variety of toxic chemicals both in the air and in the water run-off if firefighters use hoses to keep the flames in check. 🔥 Not all recovery companies will take damaged cars away, either because they are concerned about handling a burned EV or because they do not have the right recovery vehicles (EVs cannot be towed, because the turning of the back wheels generates power). 🧯Electric cars are also known to reignite up to two or three weeks after the initial fire, meaning they have to be "quarantined" away from other vehicles even after the fire appears to have been put out. 🔋Sodium-ion batteries don't suffer from these issues. ➡️ Read more on the Fire and Rescue Service approach to EV fires in England: https://www.rfr.bz/llo3kzd

Currently, lithium extraction is exclusively from hard-rock ores and continental brines, with continental brine resources being more abundant than hard-rock ores. The technology currently used to extract lithium from continental brine deposits relies on open air evaporation to concentrate the brine. Large volumes of water, 100–800 m3 per tonne of lithium carbonate, depending on the deposit, are lost through evaporation, raising concerns about the overall sustainability of the process. Furthermore, continental brine concentration is intrinsically slow, taking 10–24 months, which means that this process is not responsive to short-term changes in demand.
