About us

The FAIRR Initiative holds that intensive animal production poses material risks to the global financial system and hinders sustainable development. Our mission is to build a global network of investors who are focused and engaged on the risks linked to intensive animal production within the broader food system. FAIRR helps investors to exercise their influence as responsible stewards of capital to engage and safeguard the long-term value of their investment portfolios. Established by the Jeremy Coller Foundation, the FAIRR Initiative is a collaborative investor network that raises awareness of the material ESG risks and opportunities in protein supply chains. FAIRR helps investors to identify and prioritise these factors through cutting-edge research that investors can then integrate into their investment decision-making and active stewardship processes.

NEW REPORT: FAIRR is pleased to release ‘Shifting Diets: A Market Opportunity to Abate Climate, Nature, and Public Health Risks’. The report marks a progress update on Phase 1 of FAIRR’s Protein Diversification engagement, which aims to illustrate the role of #AlternativeProteins in facilitating the shift towards a healthier and more sustainable diet 🍽️ The engagement works with 20 of the world’s largest food manufacturers and retailers to integrate protein diversification into their climate strategies, allocate resources to diversify their protein portfolios and drive demand for nutritious and sustainable alternative protein sources 🌱 Key findings from the report include: 🔹95% of companies continue to expand their plant-based ranges, and view marketing these products to the mainstream consumer and flexitarians as a priority 🔹Companies under-utilise protein diversification as a tool to decarbonise, despite having, on average, 26% of Scope 3 emissions linked to animal agriculture 🔹Despite 90% of companies being transparent on indirect lobbying associations, only 35% disclose how their lobbying aligns with both positive climate and nutrition outcomes 🔹80% of companies report evidence of supporting decarbonisation in their animal supply chains, but only 15% have formal commitments to a just transition in animal agriculture and 95% overlook the impact of protein diversification on supply chains Phase 1 of the engagement was supported by 66 investors, representing more than US $10.8 trillion in combined assets. Max Boucher, CFA, Senior Manager, Research & Engagements (Biodiversity), and Emma Berntman, PhD, Senior Engagement Specialist (AMR) at FAIRR, recently participated in two panels held at the Groundswell Regenerative Agriculture Festival in Hertfordshire. The festival offers a space for stakeholders in the food supply chain to discuss the possibilities and challenges of #RegenerativeAgriculture and share their experiences. These were Max’s three key takeaways: 🌱There has been a shift in focus towards climate resilience and adaptation. With climate change already having an impact on food prices, most attendees at the festival spoke about the need to build a more resilient food supply system. 💰Financial incentives are lacking. Despite the transition grants offered by the European Union, the lack of long-term financial incentives helps to explain why regenerative practices are not gaining enough traction. ⚖️ We need to balance supply and demand-side solutions. On one hand, farmers need greater support in implementing sustainable practices. However, consumers cutting down on meat and dairy will also help to free up land in the UK for other uses, such as restoring #biodiversity. 🍽️There is a widespread misconception that diets high in protein improve metabolic health. However, high consumption of protein raises blood insulin levels; and, when taken in excess of needs for muscle repair and growth, the additional protein is converted by the liver into fat. FAIRR’s recent research overview for investors, developed in partnership with researchers from Tufts University, focuses on #protein and #nutrition, and sheds light on common assumptions regarding protein in food. 📈The document highlights that in high- and middle-income countries, most consumers exceed recommendations for protein, whilst diet-related non-communicable diseases (such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes) are increasingly regarded as systemic risk factors. As a result, investors should expect a rise in national policies which aim to tackle poor nutrition and diet-related disease. Learn more 👇 https://lnkd.in/eXmTvRU7

✍️Have you signed-on to FAIRR’s Sustainable Aquaculture engagement yet?   🐟Phase 3 of this engagement focuses on #biodiversity risks in farmed salmon feed sourcing and is currently open for investor sign-on.   The Sustainable Aquaculture engagement assesses 7 of the largest #salmon producers on #ESG risks related to their use of fish meal and fish oil (FMFO). Why does FMFO present an ESG risk? FMFO is used to feed farmed salmon and comes from wild-caught fish. This seriously threatens ocean biodiversity, given that over 90% of wild fisheries are currently classified as overfished or harvested at maximal capacity. FAIRR’s engagement aims to support companies in reducing their reliance on FMFO, thus mitigating their wider biodiversity risks and identifying potential opportunities.    Phase 2 was supported by 76 investors, representing US $16 trillion in combined assets.       For investor members of FAIRR, sign on to Phase 3 here 👉https://lnkd.in/emsG92Pg Find out more about FAIRR’s Sustainable Aquaculture engagement here 👉 https://lnkd.in/eqUDBcWn

🌳It is estimated that $44 trillion of economic value is dependent on #biodiversity and the ecosystem services it provides - equivalent to 50% of global GDP. Despite this, FAIRR’s recent progress report on the Waste and Pollution engagement, finds that major pork and poultry producers have made little progress when evaluating #pollution risks in their animal #SupplyChains. 🏭Additionally, the report finds that the level of disclosure from these companies does not meet investor expectations, especially regarding operations found to be at medium or high risk on water quality indicators. Developed in collaboration with researchers from Tufts University, the document explores the role of animal-sourced foods and the potential for #PlantBased alternatives. These are highly debated topics in nutrition due to their impact on both human and planetary health. It summarises key information regarding: 🔷 Scientific understanding of protein needs 🔷 Nutritional differences between protein foods 🔷 Pros and cons of processed foods 🔷 Protein policies and regulations 🔷 Consumer prioritization on nutritional health The findings of this research overview provide key scientific insights into the #environmental and social impacts of different protein sources, clarify common assumptions about their health effects, and identify trends, risks and opportunities for investors with exposure to the protein #SupplyChain.
