Shaping Five Hour Workdays for parents

About us

Five Hour Careers is working with trailblazing employers to shape Five Hour Workdays - a new way of working for parents. And in return, they get to hire from an experienced untapped talent pool. Our aim is to help parents maintain their career after children, increase diversity and reduce the gender pay gap. Because, let's face it, working 9-5 doesn't work for parents! ☀️ Summer is for strategy💡 Emma Harvey PhD and I may have slowed down slightly, but we haven’t stopped thinking… For us, as ex-teachers, the summer is a time that creates space to reflect, refine and re-energise, so we spent the day planning what we want the Five Hour Club to look like now and in the future. Excited for September? We are! What would you like to see from the Five Hour Club? #fivehourclub #strategy #collaboration

I said I would be back in September, but this email is too good to not to share: “Hi Amy, I just had to share how I’m feeling after looking through the first batch of CVs for my job posting. Honestly, it's been a bit emotional – not because the applications are lacking, but because they’re amazing! So many incredibly talented people with outstanding experience are applying. It seems like they’re overqualified for my ad, probably because they can’t find something more suited to their level with the flexibility they need. It’s both inspiring and a bit saddening to see such talent in this position. I have two more positions to fill, and I’ve already started the selection process for one. Given the quality of candidates from your site, I’m definitely going to post the second position there too. I don’t think I’ll use any other platform moving forward. Thanks again for everything! Gemma” Gemma Bucknall from ecog Limited sent within one week after our Five Hour Club job board went live. She has received over 150 applications for her first Five Hour Workday job post. For me this is everything we wanted from a Five Hour Club employer. An employer that respects and values the experience of parents. An employer that recognises their needs. An employer that understands there is a problem we need to face together. We need more employers like Gemma. We need more opportunities for talented parents who are otherwise being ignored between school runs. #FiveHourClub #FiveHourWorkday

As a startup founder, I’m recruiting for the first time, and I have to say, I’m overwhelmed—in the best way possible. For just two of the three positions I posted, we’ve received more than 300 applications. It's clear that people are looking for more than just a salary (though that’s a given!). They want to be part of something meaningful, to be treated like adults, and to have jobs that don't leave them stressed to the point of illness or missing out on their kids growing up. My journey as an employer has been quite the learning curve. In my early years of management, I have to admit, I'm not proud of some of the practices I followed. It took time and trust to open my eyes to the fact that I was perpetuating outdated ways of working simply because I had "passed the test" myself. I lost some incredibly valuable employees in the past because I didn’t speak my mind or because I lacked experience. But things have changed. I’ve created a company where people are treated the way I want to be treated. We are making a difference for future generations. What we do isn’t just about money; it’s about empowering businesses that share our vision of making a positive change. It might sound naive, but we don’t work with people or companies that don’t share our values and vision. If you just want to tick a box, we’re not the right fit for you. We believe in what we do, we have lives, and we have a sense of purpose. We will choose if you’re good enough to have our brilliant team create the most amazing sustainable strategy you’ve ever seen. Thanks to Amy Grilli and the Five Hour Club, I’ve found a platform that understands this need. Their site attracts top-notch talent, and I’m definitely sticking with them for all our future hires. If you’re an employer, check them out—you won’t regret it. Here’s to making work more flexible and life more balanced! #FlexibleWork #TalentAcquisition #WorkLifeBalance #FiveHourClub #StartupLife

This is just the beginning… Two months ago Emma Harvey PhD and I weren’t co-founders and the Five Hour Club only existed as a half-conversation during playdates. We were friends with an idea. We had a two year plan to slowly create a community, maybe make a podcast and start talking to employers at some point, as a way to support parents who, like us, are struggling to navigate life and work between school runs. I was struggling to return back to work, or find a career that could work with two children in tow. Emma had a successful career change, from being a teacher to working in tech, and wanted to celebrate that and help others do the same. This week we launched the Five Hour Careers job board. With over 1.7k parents ready to work in our Talent Pool, 60 companies in support, and plenty more conversations in the background. We have almost 10k in our Instagram community and 46K following our every step on LinkedIn. Plus over 2k downloads on our podcast and 2.5k responses to our survey. Thanks to ‘that post’, a community landed on our laps, and our two year plan was accelerated somewhat. And for that, we feel very lucky. We have been given the opportunity to ignite a change for parents in the workplace and we are grabbing it with both hands. The conversation was started, and now we have to finish it. Or at least try. Because it is important. It is also exciting and it's invigorating. And yes, it is also daunting and overwhelming at times. But we will do the best we can. No, we have not created a Five Hour Workday for ourselves yet (in fact, we have given Emma an extra job on top of her current full-time one!) And we are still learning to create boundaries. But we could not feel like better parents outside of the working day, because now we have a purpose that is driving us from the inside out. We have got the fire back in our bellies. And for that, we are so incredibly grateful. As we move into the madness that is the summer holidays, we are taking a moment to reflect on the achievements we have made in just two months. And start to imagine what we can do, with the incredible parent power and trailblazing employers behind us, in the future. See you in September, when we will hit the ground running…. #fivehourclub

It’s all about transparency. The reason we are asking employers to create Five Hour Workdays and not just “flexible work for parents” is that we know being vague in a job post creates barriers when applying to jobs. Adding flexible working to a job post can attract more candidates. In a trial with over 20 million participants, employers attracted up to 30% more candidates when job adverts included flexible working ₁. But how does this impact women returning to work? Do employers just need to add the word “flexible” to a full-time job post? No, is the answer. Research shows that women are three times more likely to choose jobs with specific information about flexible working when company values are included, than those offering a basic flexible work statement, such as “we offer flexible work” ₂. “Flexible work on request” also has the same impact as having no flexible work statement at all, which is much fewer applicants ₂. When advertising part-time roles as the default, Zurich Insurance found this boosted applications from women by 16% and found an increase of 19% of female applicants to senior roles ₃. So the reason we are creating job posts which only offer Five Hour Workdays, is for transparency. It does not mean that those Five Hour Workdays cannot be worked flexibly, but it will remove barriers, and means that parents will know exactly what they are applying for.
