London’s first on-road home-charging pilot announced Enfield Council has launched London’s first pilot scheme to test the effectiveness of an innovative through-pavement charging channel for Electric Vehicles (EVs).   The Kerbo Charge system consists of a self-closing plastic channel that’s sunk into a pavement, creating a flush surface that allows a charging cable to be run across the pavement without becoming a trip hazard, or being easy to damage or steal. The system has been developed to allow EV owners who don’t have off-street parking, to charge their vehicles when they’re parked on the street outside their home. Kerbo Charge lets participating Enfield households charge their vehicles from their home supply, which is five to 10 times cheaper than using public chargers.

Super-sized BEV vehicles being tested Testing is underway to check the viability of powering some of the world’s largest vehicles with electric-batteries. BHP Group, the natural resources company that finds, mines and processes mineral resources, is collaborating with mining group Rio Tinto, and mining equipment manufacturers, Caterpillar and Komatsu in testing BEV technology for large mining vehicles, which weigh up to 290 tonnes when filled. BHP is conducting pilot trials to assess the performance and productivity of these super-sized battery-powered haul trucks and their charging systems.

More choice of BEV Light Commercials for fleets Manufacturers continue to launch more new battery electric vehicle (BEV) LCVs, with UK buyers now having a choice of 28, according to SMMT data. That’s up from 25 last year, and the wide range of vehicles offers sizes, payloads and layouts to meet all needs. Despite the additional choice, BEV sales have declined seven per cent y-o-y.

Electric LCV sales down in 2024 Data from the SMMT show that just 5.1% (10,260) of new LCVs registrations to the end of July 2024 are BEVs, down from 5.6 per cent (11,016) market share in 2023. In contrast, Diesel sales of sub-3.5-tonne vehicles are up, reaching 187,223 new registrations by July 2024 – that’s 5000 more than last year. Government ZEV mandating demands that at least 10 per cent of new van sales must be zero emissions in 2024, so it’ll be interesting to see if manufacturers offer incentives over the remainder of the year to boost sales. An extension of the UK government's Plug-in Van Grant, beyond April 2025, might also show confidence in the country’s ZEV strategy. The UK government's Plug-in Van Grant (PiVG) helps to reduce the cost differential between ICE and electric vans by offsetting up to 35% of the price (max £2500 for small vans and £5,000 for large vans).  The grant is administered by the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) and was extended to HGVs in 2016.

BEDEO offers solution to eLCV cost and availability issues BEDEO, the EV drivetrain engineering specialist, is calling for government support in retrofitting LCVs with electric drive systems. The firm believes that the high costs of purchasing new electric vans, their limited availability and the perceived loss of load space are major inhibitors to eLCV adoption. BEDEO’s cost-effective solution to these issues is to electrify your fleet’s vans by retrofitting an electric powertrain. BEDEO’s Reborn Electric programme offers vehicle electrification at a significantly lower cost than buying new vehicles, all while delivering excellent ranges, maintaining load space and significantly reducing the CO2 emissions it produces as an ICE vehicle. Osman Boyner, CEO of BEDEO explains: “Retrofitting electric powertrains is a pragmatic solution to achieve a faster LCV transition to Net Zero. It offers a sustainable and economically-viable path forward for large van fleets across the country.” Reborn Electric offers a choice of battery sizes with ranges up to 364km, with a range extender option also available. The rear wheels are powered by in-wheel motors, with a range-extending motor located in the standard position also an option. Currently, the system is available for a range of Peugeot, Citroën, FIAT and Opel vans, with Mercedes and Renault models promised soon.

LCVs account for 40% of all logistics-related emissions, says McKinsey Research from McKinsey & Company reveals that LCVs – light commercial vehicles weighing up to 3500kg – account for 40% of all logistics-related emissions in the UK! The astonishing figure is eight times higher than the 5% experts attribute to air freight. As the adoption of EVs in this sector is slow, some experts believe that the retrofitting of electric powertrains is one solution to reducing van and small lorry emissions.

Plug-in Van Grant now applies to Ford Transit Connect and VW Caddy The UK government’s Plug-in Van Grant (PiVG) now applies to PHEV versions of the VW Caddy, and new Ford Transit Connect (once it’s Type Approved). The two small vans will benefit from up to £2,500 off their list prices, while large plug-in vans see a PiVG discount of £5,000. Small vans must have an electric range of 60+ miles and CO2 emissions under 50g/km to qualify for the grant. The two vans share a platform and have electric-only ranges of at least 68 miles.
