Updates

  • Digital conferencing technology was a lifeline for the #FoodSystems community during the pandemic, allowing global teams to stay connected and maintain their initiatives when travel and social distancing restrictions were in place. But when it comes to transforming agriculture, there’s no substitute for getting together in person, sharing knowledge over a locally-grown meal, and learning first-hand from farmers and communities about the challenges they face and the solutions they’ve pioneered to tackle them. This year, FOLU’s India and Ethiopia country platforms have been doing exactly that – connecting across borders as part of a cross-country learning programme on sustainable and regenerative agriculture. Read about the programme in this photo story, which captures snapshots from its various workshops, site visits and field trips, and highlights what the countries can learn from each other’s respective initiatives to improve livelihoods 👩🌾, soil health 🌱 and yields 🌾 https://lnkd.in/eRCaZMSA

Unsustainable agricultural production methods 🌾, and poor nutritional health of population 🧑🤝🧑 are the key drivers behind the annual hidden cost of India's food system, Food System Economics Commission estimates this at 💰USD 1.5 trillion.   To build a systemic approach towards addressing this, Food and Land Use Coalition - FOLU India alongwith its regional partner, MS Swaminathan Research Foundation, brought together about 42 participants from CSOs with deep experience of working on ground with food system actors, for southern regional consultation in Chennai.   Discussions centered on policy outlook, governance mechanisms and areas with potentially highest impact towards a transformative process.   Learn more about the consultation and FSEC's recommendations for India: https://bit.ly/3S6JvTz    Dr. Jayahari KM, FOLU India Country Coordinator: The hidden cost of India's food systems is huge, about 15% of the global hidden cost of the food system. FSEC's recommendations for India provides us with key insights that we must contextualise for different regions. This southern regional consultation initiated by FOLU India is first of the series of dialogues to be held with on-ground actors in various parts of the country.

“There can be no solution to tackling the world’s pressing climate and biodiversity crises without protecting tropical forests, and securing the rights and livelihoods of the people who live among them.”   Edward Davey, Head of World Resources Institute UK and Senior Advisor to the Food and Land Use Coalition (FOLU), outlines three ways the new UK government can accelerate forest action in the lead up to #COP30 in Brazil next year 🌳

When David Lammy, the new British Foreign Secretary, took to the stage in FCDO last week to set out his vision and values for his role, he made reference to his Guyanese heritage, and to the work of the conservation charity he and his wife run in the Amazon rainforest. Among the many remarkable aspects of the political events in the UK over recent days, it is wonderful to have a Foreign Secretary who so manifestly understands and cares about the vital importance of the world’s tropical rainforests. The same applies to Ed Miliband, Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, who played a critical role on tropical forests and REDD+ in the run-up to the Copenhagen climate summit in 2009 (I write about Ed’s role at the time in my book ‘Given Half A Chance’). For it is truly the case that there can be no solution to tackling the world’s pressing climate and biodiversity crises without protecting these remarkable ecosystems, and securing the rights and livelihoods of the people who live among them. And the tropical forests require the highest level of political attention from leaders around the world – above all, of course, from the leadership of the tropical forest nations themselves. The UK has been an important force in recent years in driving global action on nature and climate, including the tropical rainforests. It was centrally involved in the negotiation of a new Global Biodiversity Framework, agreed in Montreal a year and a half ago. At COP21 in Glasgow, the UK brokered a commitment signed by 145 world leaders to halt and reverse forest loss by 2030; the role of tropical rainforests in fighting climate change was elevated in Glasgow to the front pages of the world’s newspapers. And over several decades, the UK government has used its international development funds to support tropical forest countries to protect and restore their forests, to secure the rights of indigenous peoples and local communities, and to provide people in and around the forests with more sustainable livelihoods. These funds have played their part in supporting tropical forest countries – including Brazil, Colombia and Indonesia – to achieve significant and laudable reductions in deforestation in recent years. They have also played a vital role in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, the Republic of Congo, Cameroon and other nations of the Congo Basin, where deforestation and poverty are most acute; and where there is an urgent need for deeper support. The next 18 months provide an important opportunity to drive urgent ambition and action on tropical forests; and the new UK government could make a valuable contribution, in at least three ways, set out in the piece below: https://lnkd.in/eCHtKEf9

Halo, Sobat Pangan! #SistemPanganLestari

  • 📣 Now is our window to secure a #NaturePositive economy for all by 2030! With less than 100 days until the UN Biodiversity #COP16, Business for Nature has published a statement outlining five high-level policy recommendations for governments to accelerate the implementation of the #BiodiversityPlan to drive corporate action on #Nature. The statement, endorsed by 130 businesses and financial institutions with combined revenues of $1.1 trillion, calls on governments to adopt and implement policies to: 🌎 Make sure business and finance protect nature and restore degraded ecosystems 🌎 Ensure sustainable resource use and management to reduce negative environmental impacts 🌎 Value and embed nature in decision-making and disclosure 🌎 Align all financial flows to transition to a nature-positive, net zero and equitable economy 🌎 Adopt or strengthen ambitious global agreements to address key nature loss challenges It’s high time for governments to create an enabling regulatory framework and put nature at the heart of decision making. 🔗 Find out more: https://lnkd.in/dYcJkbA #COP16 #NaturePositive #ForNature #NowForNature

  • Against a backdrop of increasing climate shocks and accelerating population growth, providing #GoodFood4All is a top priority for Ethiopia in the coming decades. While scaling sustainable and regenerative production is paramount, “the country can enormously boost its crop output and ensure #FoodSecurity by enhancing post-harvest management practices,” highlight Sofia Ahmed, Teklemariam Awoke and Shiferaw Tafesse, CDPM® in a new op-ed. Food and cash crop losses in Ethiopia currently amount to over $1.2 billion per year – equivalent to more than 25% of the country’s export earnings. Standardizing data collection, improving access to post-harvest management technologies, and scaling capacity-building programs for smallholder farmers are “critical” steps that the government and private sector can take to tackle the issue. #Postharvestloss in Ethiopia is staggering. Estimates suggest that major #food and #cashcroplosses amount to over 1.2 billion dollars annually, equivalent to more than 25pc of the country’s export earnings. “Key stakeholders in the agriculture sector need to understand the magnitude of the problem and prioritize creating awareness, improving access to post-harvest loss technologies, providing capacity-building programs for smallholder farmers and value chain actors on proper post-harvest handling, and investing in essential infrastructure.” write Sofia Ahmed, Shiferaw Tafesse (PHD), and Teklemariam Awoke in the recent Op-ed from FOLU Ethiopia.
