It turns out there’s a plan to help us adopt a more sustainable and nutritionally balanced diet. The British Dietetic Association (BDA) and Aldi UK have recently updated their sustainable shopping basket. This new guide provides practical advice to help shoppers make healthier, more sustainable choices in stores. The products in the basket were chosen not only for health, sustainability, and affordability but also based on consumer preferences, focusing on familiar and enjoyable items. But what is the carbon impact behind this change? ➡ We’ve analysed the average carbon impact of key meals listed in their weekly shop using data from our (Foodsteps) database. Inspired by the Eatwell Guide, the basket features ⤵ ● A 50/50 split between animal and plant proteins, offering five times more plant-based protein than the current UK average diet. ● A variety of whole grains, including wholemeal bread, wheat bisks, and wholegrain pasta. ● A vibrant selection of fruits and vegetables, from grapes to courgettes and sweet potatoes, with an emphasis on organic options. ● Animal products that meet higher environmental and animal welfare standards, though more work is needed to improve certification schemes. ● The total cost is £62.43, which is lower than the average household shop. What happens when food leaders unite to transform our food system for the betterment of the planet and its people? You get the Footprint Awards. We're extremely proud to say that several of our clients took home awards for their ambitious and effective work in reducing impact across the food life cycle. These recognitions highlight that dedication and innovation drive real change. A special highlight of the event was hearing from Carolyn Ball 🌍🍴💚, Director for Delivery of Net Zero at Compass Group UK & Ireland, who said, "Foodsteps are doing such an extraordinary job on extensive data analysis." Carolyn also emphasised the urgent need for change, saying, "We know that over the coming decades, the world will undergo the biggest economic shift in living memory. We have a real responsibility to use all the resources and capabilities at our disposal to show how change can happen at a faster pace than it has to date." This powerful message underscores not just the significance of accurate data but also the forward-thinking approach that Foodsteps and our incredible community embody in rethinking food decarbonisation. Huge thanks to Charles Miers and Footprint Media Group for inviting us to enjoy this momentous.

What does regenerative agriculture on a large scale look like? Yesterday, we left our desks behind for an inspiring visit to our friends at Wildfarmed, joining a vibrant mix of bakeries, restaurants, producers and retailers for their annual Field Trip. We spent a delightful day amidst their fields, learning about and witnessing their innovative bi-cropping methods in action. Seeing barley and peas grow side by side in the same field was a testament to a thriving ecosystem that supports commercially used crops for Waitrose & Partners, Azzurri Group, and Compass Group UK & Ireland. Did you know that Foodsteps is an official agriculture and research partner for Wildfarmed? We’re thrilled to see the crops we’ve performed LCAs for flourishing and leading the way in sustainable farming practices. There's still a lot to learn (and more interesting projects to come), but this has been a fantastic opportunity to reflect and hear about the great things others are doing in this space. A huge thanks to Wildfarmed for hosting us and to our clients Azzurri and Compass for joining us on this incredible journey. #RegenerativeAgriculture #SustainableCrops #RegenAg #AgriTech #Wildfarmed
