The Freedom Law Clinic, in partnership with Murray Hughman Solicitors and Mountford Chambers are delighted to announce the date for the final of our inaugural Criminal Appeals Mooting Competition, in aid of Alzheimer's UK. At 1900, on the evening of the 20th of September 2024, four finalists will come together in the final of our Criminal Appeals Moot, which has sought to target potential leaders in the future of criminal law. The final will be held at a Central London location near to London Bridge station. Tickets for the final are free. If you would like to reserve a place, then please email [email protected] with your name. You will receive an email with the location details. We will be asking for donations to Alzheimer's UK on the night. Congratulations to our amazing finalists. They are: Olivia Hardiman, William Cann, Jennifer Zhou and Gbenga Onliyeyu. This week, the clinic's SQE/QWE students have been: 1) Reviewing evidence in a complex criminal conviction involving the importation of cocaine and the infiltration of the EncroChat network; 2) Reviewing papers in a housing and welfare case involving a vulnerable adult; 3) Preparing to assist an applicant under the Afghan citizens resettlement scheme; 4) Advising a client with respect to a Community Protection Notice and action against their local authority; 5) Taking a first read of papers in a complex murder appeal. #sqe education is changing. The clinic is continuing to offer essential pro-bono support. We recently assisted a complainant in a criminal case related to domestic violence to make an application for a non-molestation order. This provided an essential ‘fall-back’ protection following the conclusion of criminal proceedings and the cessation of the defendant’s bail conditions. We are continuing to work with the complainants to answer questions they have about the criminal proceedings and to help them secure legal representation.
