Why don't people like Novak Djokovic? Djokovic is undoubtedly one of the world's greatest tennis players ever. Yet for some reason many people don't like him. This week he got furious about the lack of love for him and had a go at the crowd afterwards. It was a tense situation - I know as I was in the crowd. But why? I think it is all to do with the ancient friend-or-foe signal that we all have. In under three seconds we come to a judgement about someone. Research shows we just use two criteria: - Warmth - Competence The warmth judgement allows us to judge their intentions. The competence is especially important if they aren't warm - as they can do us harm. Djokovic isn't very warm but he is super competent. Double alarm bells! By the way - warmth and competence are the best criteria for good team leaders too. People skills are essential - the most important skills. Competency is second most important. Don't put (people who aren't warm into people leadership roles! https://lnkd.in/gdMhhHRb

I have been working with Jaye Cowle 😊 and her team at Launch for the last few months. It is wonderful when a CEO really gets the importance of building happy teams. She has been passionate about happiness for some time but only just started to use Friday Pulse and says that it has changed the type of conversations they have internally. I ran a half day session with them on why happiness is a serious business and we concluded with a workshop brainstorming ideas about how to deal with time pressures in a fast moving agency. If you're interested in one of my in-person sessions then do contact me. Have a happy Friday.

My mission is to create a happy workplace where the team can thrive 💚 Learning about happiness at work and taking the team on the journey, is all part of the process. So we were thrilled to have the creator of the Happy Planet Index and former government advisior on happiness (take note next PM!), Nic Marks, come to our company get together to give the team a deep dive into happiness at work. His TED talk on happiness has had almost 3m views 🤯 Here are some of the nuggets of wisdom: 👥 Humans are social, we do better in packs than we do alone so time together is important. 🙀 80,000 is around the time you'll be at work so it is a major driver of happiness. 😄 Happiness is contagious. Unhappiness can be the same. I might stop there because he's writing a book and I don't want to give away all his tips before he publishes it! The main gist is that we spend so much time at work so optimising the workplace for happiness is worthwhile work, yet it isn't always high up the priority list. Thank you Nic for sharing your wisdom with the team. Ps Our company get together was glamping which you can probably tell! My hair smelt of campfires 🤣 #Happiness #Culture

Motivation at work comes down to three core things 👇🏽 🧘♂️ Autonomy Responsibility and decision making. Feeling in control of the work we are doing and gaining confidence in our ability can lead to us working harder. 🏃♂️ Mastery Our innate drive to develop competence. Developing and mastering a skill motivates us to put more work and effort into it so that we can achieve a level we are proud of. 🙌 Purpose Find meaning in our work. Feeling as though the work we’re doing is contributing to a goal that is above us, hopefully for a good cause. Implementing these three aspects of motivation into your team’s work could be hugely beneficial to driving their performance. Start by giving them room to make their own decisions, and encourage them to work on a project by themselves (while always being available to support if needed).

What kind of workplace happiness advocates would we be if we didn’t encourage teams to work better together? A well planned team event can be great for that! As a company your most important resource is your staff. If they aren’t working effectively as a team how can you expect them to achieve a goal together? Spending time together in person can help: 💪Make conflict easier to navigate 🚀Improve communication and appreciation in the team 🤝Build friendships that will ultimately increase staff retention rates Just remember team exercises aren’t one size fits all Speak to your team to find out what they would enjoy And they’re certainly not a quick win for building a happier team But spending time together is important as part of a wider strategy The point is for them to be fun and bring you closer together!
