Here's how investors evaluate your startup, with the Left-Hand Side being more aligned for Early Stages (#PreSeed, #Seed) and Right-Hand Side more for Late Stages (#SeriesA, B, C...). The list is *not* exhaustive so for the investors & advisors in my network, feel free to comment with your additions and thoughts. Looking at the startups I personally invested in, for me: - Founder/Market fit is a must. I want you, as a Founder, to have the relevant domain expertise. - Determination: I'm looking for examples where you persisted despite obstacles - Realistic projections & sustainable business model: hearing 'We have no competition' and 'We're going to achieve a Unicorn status' are my personal red flags Myself and Sam Simpson of FounderCatalyst co-created this graphics together some time ago and now it's part of my Fundraising Playbooks too. #vcfunding #capitalraising #startupadvice

What's the difference between an 'okay' investor pitch and a GREAT one? The key is in how you (i) capture, (ii) maintain, and (iii) recover investor attention: (i) CAPTURE attention Your opening and small talk is important. You're making your 1st impression, and by making it highly relevant to the investor, you can ensure their interest sparks up. "I was looking at your website earlier, noticed Company X in your portfolio. I really like how they... and what we do could actually help them to... which is one of the things I'll cover in our go to market." (ii) MAINTAIN Effective pitches often include interactive elements, storytelling, and varied content delivery methods. The Pitch Deck that you're screen-sharing should also not be too dense/ complex, to avoid too much cognitive load. Incorporating extra slides that are investor-specific is a great way to stand out. (iii) RECOVER In an average pitch presentation, attention starts high but declines more rapidly. Seasoned founders (and public speakers) can periodically boost the audience's attention with "intermediate conclusions," which help re-engage the audience. These are strategic summaries or highlights that refocus attention. Another strategic playbook here - pause and ask if the Investor has any questions so far. #fundraisingplaybooks #capitalraising #startuptips

Successful capital raises start with aligning your outreach strategy accordingly to the investor TYPE. Compare Angel Investors and VCs: ANGEL INVESTORS 👼 1. Research the Angel’s background (LinkedIn Profile, website, syndicate memberships, Crunchbase profile, shipshape.vc mentions) 2. Like & comment their relevant post/ blog/ article etc. 3. Start your outreach with a personalised 1-line opener (e.g. “I read your LinkedIn post on ____ and I’m seriously impressed with ___”) 4. Make no CTA in your first email, or if you do, very small (“Keep you in the loop?”/ “Would you be open to connecting”) 5. Do not pitch your business in the 1st email ("Ask for money, get advice. Ask for advice, get money"). Also if you attach your Pitch Deck in the very first email, that's playing all your cards and you have nothing to keep the conversation [+ relationship building] going. 6. Follow up with a material update (key achievement, traction metric, etc) and ask a specific question: ❌ "We're starting to build our product. I would love to pick your brain as I've seen you have been in this industry - I’d be very grateful for a couple of starting points." vs ✅ "It's the early stages of our product development (30% complete), but based on our research there are 4 core functions that our prototype should have. I'd love to get your take on this selection." _ _ _ _ _ VCs 💸 In case of VCs, Steps 1-6 above are good practice too, but there are more considerations coming into play e.g. investment thesis, LPs' mandate, current portfolio, how well they're doing, cadence of investor updates, and much more. A founder who cold emailed a VC using my template got a reply just 20 minutes (!) later, and went into fruitful investment discussions. I described the full VC Outreach Playbook, alongside 12 Cold Email Templates & 12 Follow Up Templates --> on my profile [Eva], above the followers count. #venturecapital #capitalraising #startupfunding #vcfunding #startupadvice
