New data reveals that 64% of adults in Great Britain who have experienced any problems with gambling have never spoken to anyone about it. Out of those, 39% attribute their silence to feelings of stigma, such as shame, guilt, and fear of judgement. Gambling Minister Stuart Andrew said: “Too often we see the devastating impacts of harmful gambling, and our white paper outlines a host of new measures we're implementing to protect those most at risk. A key element of our plans is the introduction of a statutory levy on gambling companies to raise sufficient, sustainable and trusted funding for research, prevention and treatment of gambling related harm." "Stigma is the biggest barrier preventing people from seeking help, and I welcome GambleAware’s vital campaign which is raising awareness of the issue and helping people get the support they need.” Let's open up about gambling.

Last week we published a report which looked at how people from certain marginalised communities, such as people with experience of homelessness, are affected by gambling. The Big Issue reported on it in a powerful story, highlighting an individual experiencing gambling harms who took out loans and credit cards to fund her gambling which left her homeless, but who found her way out of the shadows of gambling addiction. We recognise the damaging spectrum of harms people go through but believe there's power in recovery and receiving support. We strongly believe that it’s time for Britain to tackle gambling harms with a robust national strategy, rooted in public health principles. Our new Chair of Trustees, Professor Sian Griffiths wrote for Politics Home last week about why the new Labour government must quickly take action and deliver regulation that’s fit for today’s world to address the crisis of gambling harm. GambleAware reposted this
I'm excited to share that a new report titled 'Gambling Harms and Coping with Marginalisation and Inequality', authored by National Centre for Social Research and funded by GambleAware, was highlighted in the Big Issue this morning. The report shows how individuals from marginalised communities use gambling to cope with challenges like social exclusion, mental health issues, and poverty. It also found evidence that there are higher rates of gambling harm among people experiencing homelessness, people with ADHD, people with experience of migration, and people with certain mental health challenges. Stigma around gambling harms, intersecting with issues like homelessness and mental health, makes seeking support difficult. The report calls for inclusive and adaptive gambling treatment services and further research to better address the needs of these communities. This week, the Gambling Commission launched a new gambling survey which is set to become one of the largest in the world and establish a new baseline for understanding gambling behaviour in Britain. The Gambling Survey for Great Britain featuring responses from 9,804 individuals, found that harm from problem gambling in Great Britain may be eight times higher than thought. 1 in 40 people who gambled in the last year experienced severe harm to their life, such as turning to crime to finance gambling, experiencing a relationship breakdown, or losing their home. These findings fuel our mission to work collaboratively to help keep society safe from gambling harms.
