On International #YouthDay we're celebrating 15 years of the Girlguiding advocate panel! 👏📢🌟 Members of the advocate panel, aged 14 to 25, speak out in the media, learn new skills for their future, represent Girlguiding at events, shape Girlguiding's research and make sure that girls' and young women's voices are heard by people in power. Over the past 15 years, Girlguiding's advocate panel has seen through five general elections, attended more than 25 party conferences, spoken on local and national news, successfully campaigned for relationship and sex education to be made compulsory in schools, secured new laws to make girls safer online and made friends for life. 💪 We'd love to hear about your experiences as an advocate! Please share your stories in the comments. You can also share your memories as an advocate, past and present, on social media using #15YearsofGGAdvocates and tagging @girlguiding. Come with Maisie and Maile to an Amplify meeting about all things new interest badges! Amplify is our youth steering group that makes sure girls' voices are heard at the highest levels of Girlguiding 🗣️ Did you know interest badges are the part girls enjoy the most about our programme? That’s why we’re working with members to create 72 new ones and give them more of what they love 💙 Here's a sneak peek at what Maisie and Maile got up to 👇 ✨Met Jean and Tilly from the programme team and heard all about why we're creating new badges. ✨Saw an overview of the 72 new interest badges for each section. ✨Ranked them based on which ones they wanted to feedback on. ✨Annotated the challenges for the badges and shared their thoughts. ✨And so much more! A big thank you to Amplify and all our members who are helping us shape the new interest badges. Want to get involved too? You can still create your own interest badge at home or with your unit then send it to us for inspiration! Find out how here: https://lnkd.in/e66bZz3q

Girlguiding advocates for the safety of girls everywhere. The attack in Southport last week was devastating, and our thoughts are with everyone affected. We condemn the racist and Islamophobic violence that is happening across the UK right now. This is abhorrent and has no place in our society. We stand in support and solidarity with those in Girlguiding and wider society who are Muslim, people of colour, refugees or migrants, and everyone affected by the violence. Last night’s show of unity was heartening, and we are proud to be part of strong communities that stand together against hate. We have some support and advice for our members here https://lnkd.in/eBuHDJXe.

We want to encourage volunteer recruitment across the UK, and we need you to be involved! Do you volunteer with Girlguiding? Balance work/family commitments with unit meetings and admin? Have some wacky and wonderful stories? If the answer is yes, send us a message! We're looking for a Young Adult Leader (between 18-30yrs) of a Guide or Ranger unit to be the figurehead of our 2024 volunteer recruitment campaign, to highlight the benefits of volunteering and how rewarding it can be. If you think this could be you, or know someone who fits the bill, please email [email protected] and we will get back to you as soon as possible! *Please be aware that there will be filming involved with the project, taking place in later August/Early September.

Back in May, we called for the UK’s major political parties to have frontbenches that are at least 50% women. The UK government frontbench is now majority women, and we’re delighted! The UK government joins Scottish government, Welsh government, and the Northern Ireland Executive in meeting our ask, and for the first time every nation has at least 50% women in ministerial roles. We’re also very pleased to hear that Nusrat Ghani MP, Caroline Nokes MP and Judith Cummins MP have been appointed as an all-women Deputy Speaker lineup in The House of Commons. We know representation alone isn’t enough, but this small step represents massive progress towards a future where the voices of all girls are valued. That’s more important than ever with the multiple crises facing this generation of young people. We look forward to working with politicians from all parties to build a fairer, safer UK for girls and young women.

🚨 Appearance pressures are one of the biggest concerns amongst girls in the UK, and girls are finding their own negative thoughts about their looks to be all consuming. We're urging the new Government to make it a requirement for advertisers, including influencers, to be clear when filters, editing software or artificial intelligence has been used to change or create an image. Our Girls' Attitudes Survey asks over 2,000 girls and young women both inside and outside of Girlguiding how they feel about the pressures facing them today. The full report will be released in October, but our initial findings show girls as young as 7 feel they're held to a different beauty standard than boys of their age, and that they face more appearance-based scrutiny. Girlguiding advocate Erin, aged 16, says: 'The rise in the usage of filters on social media is significantly knocking the confidence of young girls all over the UK. It is clear to see that immediate action is required. It is time for advertisers and content creators to take accountability to ensure that girls of today, and of the future, can be protected from the harm edited images can cause'.
