💬 The heated debate over New York's #CongestionPricing we've seen over the past couple of months is the latest installment in a decades-long discourse that's been going on since the 1970s. And for a good reason. The Big Apple desperately needs to up its #TrafficControl efforts. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority estimates that: 🍎 700,000 vehicles enter NY's central business district every weekday. 🍎 Each driver loses 117 hours per year in the NY #Gridlock. 🍎 In total, $20 million worth of time and productivity goes to waste every year. However, it doesn't seem like the debate is going to end anytime soon, as the newest plan to implement a $15 #CongestionCharge for driving into Manhattan was canceled this June. The reason? According to NY's governor, the fee would impede the city's economic growth and disproportionately targeted its middle-class. Still, other cities prove that this #TrafficManagement strategy can successfully reduce #Congestion. 🚦 Singapore's Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) system is a pioneer in congestion pricing, inspiring cities worldwide. Using #TrafficMonitoring cameras and automated payments, ERP effectively manages road usage. It’s estimated that motorized traffic dropped by nearly 25,000 vehicles during peak hours, with average speeds up by 20%. This brought much-needed relief to a metropolis where roads occupy nearly as much space as housing. 🚦 Despite initial resistance, London's congestion pricing scheme quickly became a success after its launch in 2003. Transport for London reports a 30% reduction in congestion and a 30% boost in mass transit use in the city center. The program also improved noise levels and air pollution metrics. 🚦 Stockholm's congestion charge system, fully deployed in 2007, relies on automated number plate recognition, eliminating the need for manual fee collection. The charge varies by the hour, peaking during rush times. Initially, 70% of citizens opposed the scheme, but as traffic dropped by 25%, support quickly grew. How about your city? Another study by the agency shows that since 2016, 8 to 9% of all #TrafficIncidents have been directly caused by driver distraction. However, some naturalistic analyses suggest that up to 69% (!) of crashes are caused by distractors such as: 🔴 Handheld and hands-free phone calls 🔴 Texting 🔴 Browsing social media 🔴 Talking to passengers 🔴 Interacting with built-in car systems 🔴 Roadside advertising All these activities significantly increase the risk of #RoadCollisions. Phones are among the most dangerous, raising the chance of crashes by 2.5 times. All in all, drivers who use mobile phones are 4 times more likely to be involved in an accident, WHO reports. Policymakers and road safety agencies are well aware of the issue and take measures to address it. Social campaigns like NHTSA's Put the Phone Away or UN's Global Road Safety aim to address the issue by educating road users about the dangers of distracted driving. Still, despite the rising social awareness, phone usage behind the wheel remains high. Research by the European Survey Research Association revealed that over 24% of European drivers text and more than 28% talk on handheld phones while driving. European Road Safety Observatory reports that European car drivers engage in distracting activities for around 50% of the total driving time! While changing #DrivingHabits targets the root of the problem, municipalities can support these efforts by adopting a proactive approach to #RoadSafety. 🦺 Technological solutions like #TrafficMonitoring and #VideoAnalytics are crucial in developing #TrafficSafety strategies and bringing them into effect.
