🚲 Cargo bike riders rally in London 📢 More than 80 cargo bikes took to the streets in an effort to encourage businesses to replace their vans with a pollution free alternative. 🌎 Clean Cities found that there was a 63% increase in use of cargo bikes between 2022 and 2023. Mood swings could be caused by the air we breathe ❇️ A new study found that exposure to dirty air can cause mood swings and even increase your risk of anxiety and depression. ❇️In the study, researchers developed a novel measure, affective sensitivity to air pollution (ASAP), to assess psychological vulnerability to climate change. They focused on fluctuations in individuals' emotions caused by their daily exposure to air pollution. ❇️They analysed 8,541 daily reports of affect, 97% of which (n=8,250) could be linked to daily air pollution data. ✅ The study highlights the importance of considering individual differences in sensitivity to air pollution when studying its effects on well-being. 🚚 Distribution warehouses to blame for air pollution ❇️ A new study in the US has revealed that nitrogen dioxide (NO2) levels are 20% higher near warehouses, on average, compared to upwind locations. 📡 The researchers studied satellite data to study the air quality around 150,000 warehouses and they have established that the culprit is truck traffic which frequently uses the facilities. ❗ The result is that the 15 million people who live within 1km of the warehouses could experience health effects from the NO2, which has been associated with asthma, cardiovascular disease and premature death. 🚋 New York subway full of hazardous air💨 New York University researchers found that the average subway platform had four times the particulate pollution (PM2.5) exposure standard deemed safe over a 24-hour period by the Environmental Protection Agency, and nine times the exposure guideline set by the World Health Organization. Those who live further away from their place of work (usually those on lower incomes), will spend longer on the subway per day.
