Power Trader is a facilitated workshop that puts you in charge of your own energy company which has to balance supply and demand whilst facing variable weather, reliability issues and fuel price volatility. New tools such as carbon markets, hydrogen and flexible customers allow them to deliver net zero whilst still turning a profit. The workshop can be delivered entirely online (allowing international participation) or face to face with tokens and card, but we find a combination of a physical workshop with the webapp trading platform gives the best experience all round. The workshop is designed to run for a full day, but half day and even 2 hours are possible by sacrificing some options. Mike Colechin is the founder and owner of Cultivate Innovation, an organisation that consults in academia, firms, and not-for-profits, driving innovation forward and engage project stakeholders in creative ways. He is also a co-founder of Heuristic Games, a joint venture to design and run workshops based around ‘serious games’ that engage business, government and academic audiences in unique learning experiences. At the Net Zero Futures Conference, he will be hosting one of the parallel workshop sessions, where you can get a taste of Heuristic Games' Power Trader - where participants run their own electricity company to keep their customers’ lights on, maximise profit and minimise carbon emissions! They are working in teams to run an energy company that is operating in a simulated electricity market, sourcing and delivering power to customers by running generation facilities and trading with other teams.
