The Palace of Westminster has been illuminated tonight in solidarity with Sefton Council, Liverpool City Council and everyone affected by the tragic incidents which took place earlier this week in Southport. Today was the #StateOpening of Parliament. 📆 This marks the start of the parliamentary year, and the #KingsSpeech sets out the government’s agenda for the next session of Parliament. 👑

Tomorrow the State Opening of Parliament will take place in the UK House of Lords marking the formal start to Parliament's new session. ⏬ During the State Opening ceremony Black Rod is sent to summon the House of Commons to listen to the #KingsSpeech in the House of Lords. Slamming the door as Black Rod approaches symbolises the independence of the Commons from the monarchy. The King's Speech will set out the government’s agenda for the next session, outlining proposed policies and legislation. After the speech, a new parliamentary session starts with both the House of Commons and House of Lords debating the contents of the #KingsSpeech.
