Humanity Insured is a new not-for-profit set up in 2024 with the backing of the insurance industry and incubated by Howden, a leading global insurance intermediary group. 3.6 billion people on the climate crisis frontline are not adequately supported by the insurance market – or are excluded altogether. We exist to change this and are transforming the insurance system. Making insurance work for, and available to people on the climate crisis frontline so they can protect their futures. We do this by using private and philanthropic capital at scale to help communities on the climate frontline access and pay for new forms of insurance. The financial protection insurance empowers people with the choice to invest in everything from education to new farming techniques. Growing confidence, resilience, and strength. This means failed harvests don’t steal childhoods. Sick livestock don’t become lost livelihoods. And disasters don’t descend into crises. Climate resilience starts with financial resilience.

Edwin Macharia, our moderator, put it perfectly - “there was magic in the room” as more than a hundred people gathered for the launch of a new independent, not-for-profit: Humanity Insured. It’s something that’s never been done before. We’re pooling philanthropy and the private sector to help millions on the climate crisis frontline access and pay for insurance premiums. That, in turn, allows people to build financial resilience, stop fearing for the future and start planning for tomorrow. In recent years, Howden has helped bring the wonder of parametric insurance to smallholder farmers who have lost their livelihoods to droughts and floods. We’ve also supported informal women workers subject to extreme heat. But no-one who heard the expert panellists talking about the impact of extreme weather on those in the eye of the storm could be in any doubt that we must do more…and for more people. Humanity Insured will harness that global determination to collaborate on doing good. The new CEO of Humanity Insured Charlie Langdale said this has been a labour of love yet, for the magic to take hold, it’s time for the hard work to begin. #HumanityInsured #NotForProfit #ForceForGood
