Hertford Road, Barking is a project that has been many years in the making and my passion project for the last year.   Pre-application work commenced in 2019 to revitalise the existing Wickes Store and Bridge House. In 2021, Iceni Projects commenced work as the planners and project managers, alongside Makower Architects, to bring the client’s vision to life and create a new riverside community, which was compatible with Barking’s transforming context and LBBD’s emerging policy.   During the more recent pre-application engagement with Be First, Statutory Consultees and the community, the design evolved to overcome the site’s challenges and deliver significant public benefit.   The submitted scheme in June 2024 comprises 880 new homes, including 35% affordable housing across 6 buildings, community and commercial spaces, an enhanced riverside path, publicly accessible square, a new public park, a car free development and energy works.­­   It has been a pleasure to work alongside one of Iceni’s finest, Andrew Gale, and the wider project team - Iceni Projects EIA, Townscape and Heritage, Socioeconomics and Archaeology, Makower Architects, Outerspace, i-Transport, XCO2, DS2, RWDI, Greengage Environmental Ltd, RSA Design, WSP, Price & Myers, Velocity, Semper, Earlsbury and Arborclimb.
