Setting and enforcing global standards for a high-integrity voluntary carbon market

About us

The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (IC-VCM) is the new governance body which sets and enforces the highest standards of ethics, sustainability, and transparency for the global voluntary carbon market. Its purpose is to ensure the voluntary carbon market contributes to the goals of the Paris Agreement by mobilizing finance into projects and programs that reduce or remove greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere. This ensures the voluntary market operates for the public good – while minimizing social and environmental harms. The Integrity Council develops standards according to the world’s best available science and policy expertise, and through public consultation. The body consists of a Governing Board, an Expert Panel, and an Executive Secretariat, which is hosted by the Green Finance Institute in the United Kingdom.

  • 📢CCP Labelled credits are paving the way to a VCM2.0. Issuing the first approvals for carbon-crediting methodologies that adhere to our science-based Core Carbon Principles (CCPs) is a significant step towards building a high-integrity #CarbonMarket that scales. ✅ CCP-Eligible programs can now issue CCP-Labelled credits under the CCP-Approved methodologies. This is crucial towards mobilising new and additional private investment into #ClimateSolutions, removing billions of tonnes of emissions that would otherwise not be viable. 🌿 The ICVCM remains committed to ongoing assessments of programs and methodologies at the beginning of a new high-integrity future for the #VoluntaryCarbonMarket. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/etBY-P4S

  • The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market is committed to building trust in the #VoluntaryCarbonMarket by establishing the highest standards for integrity. Our science-based Assessment Framework and "two-tick" process are crucial to achieving our goal. 📈 What does the "Two-Tick" process mean? For a program to issue CCP-labelled credits, it needs to be BOTH 🌿a CCP-Eligible program AND 🌿for the credits to belong to a CCP-Approved methodology. This ensures not only strong program governance but also integrity in the rules for how the credited project has been designed and implemented. These credits represent the highest standard for integrity within the #VCM. Together, CCP eligibility and approval create a powerful framework that instils confidence in buyers regarding the quality and environmental impact of CCP-labelled credits.🤝 We are working towards a VCM 2.0 where buyers seeking high-integrity credits can look for the CCP label. 🔗 Learn More: https://lnkd.in/ephzMAJh

  • 🌍 On this International Day of the world's Indigenous Peoples, the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) would like to acknowledge the invaluable contributions of Indigenous Peoples to global climate action. As significant defenders and stewards of our natural carbon sinks, Indigenous Peoples must be recognised as key partners in the road towards building a #VCM 2.0.🌿 To elevate and enforce their rights within the #VoluntaryCarbonMarket, led by their interests, values, principles, and vision, the Integrity Council recently announced the launch of the self-led Indigenous Peoples and local communities (IPs and LCs) Voluntary Carbon Market Engagement Forum. 🤝 “We need Indigenous People to be more involved in the process of crafting what high integrity looks like in every market. We’re doing this through helping to set up the Indigenous People and Local Communities Forum for the voluntary carbon market.” says Jennifer Tauli Corpuz, ICVCM Board Member and Senior Global Policy and Advocacy Lead at Nia Tero Foundation. The independent, self-led Forum represents a pivotal step in ensuring that Indigenous Peoples have a strong and influential voice in creating a high-integrity voluntary carbon market that upholds and promotes their rights and interests. 🌱 Through fostering collaboration, and empowering communities, the Forum aims to develop a carbon market that delivers tangible benefits to Indigenous Peoples while contributing to global climate goals.📈 🔗 Learn more about our work: https://lnkd.in/ecHhVEU8 #IndigenousPeoplesDay

  • The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) remains steadfast in its mission to enhance the credibility and impact of the #VoluntaryCarbonMarket. 🌱   We recently announced our Board’s decision that carbon credits from projects designed using eight existing renewable energy methodologies will not receive our high-integrity CCP® (Core Carbon Principles) label. ❌   This decision underscores our mission to create a transparent and accountable #VoluntaryCarbonMarket (VCM).🌿   ‘Renewable energy is crucial for global decarbonisation and plays a critical role in the transition to net-zero. We need to modernise the design of these carbon projects, which carbon-crediting programs can and should do.  New, more robust methodologies would unlock finance for a new wave of renewable energy projects in places where they are most needed.’ said our Board Chair Annette Nazareth.    The Integrity Council is committed to raising the bar for #CarbonCredits. ‘We are taking the tough decisions necessary to build trust in the voluntary carbon market and maximise its potential to fund climate solutions and channel finance to the Global South. All participants will benefit over time, as CCP-labelled credits unlock greater investment flows, drive innovation, and shape the development of a high-integrity market.’ shared the Integrity Council’s CEO, Amy Merrill. 📈   Our science led ‘two-tick’ process is paving the way towards #VCM 2.0, a market that upholds credibility and integrity. CCP-labelled credits guarantee the removal or reduction of one tonne of emissions per credit, while also scaling up private sector finance for high-quality projects to reduce emissions and remove carbon from the atmosphere.  ✅   🔗Read the full press release here: https://lnkd.in/eERpiK25

  • 📢At the Integrity Council, our core mission is to ensure that all carbon credits deliver genuine and lasting environmental benefits. Our Governing Board has announced that #CarbonCredits issued under existing renewable energy methodologies will not receive our high-integrity CCP® (Core Carbon Principles) label. 🌱Additionality is a fundamental principle of high-integrity carbon credits, ensuring that emissions reductions or removals would not have been achieved without carbon credit finance. As renewable energy becomes increasingly cost-competitive worldwide, it is essential that carbon crediting methodologies evolve to accurately assess whether projects would have proceeded without the financial incentive of carbon credits. Updated methodologies will support a new generation of projects in regions facing the most significant barriers to renewable energy implementation and support the global energy transition away from fossil fuels. This will ensure that carbon credits support truly additional and transformative projects. 🤝 💡Key highlights: ❌Methodology Rejections: Our latest assessments have resulted in the rejection of eight renewable methodologies, affecting approximately 236 million unretired credits (32% of the voluntary carbon market). These methodologies failed to meet our rigorous requirements for additionality. In addition, a methodology for projects in the magnesium industry that reduce the release of sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) was rejected because it did not meet additionality requirements. 🌱Impact on Renewable Energy: Renewable energy is crucial for global decarbonisation. However, many renewable energy projects no longer need carbon credits as other sources of finance are available. We encourage carbon-crediting programs to develop more robust methodologies that better assess whether these projects need carbon credit revenues. ✅Approved Methodologies: Our Governing Board has approved four new Ozone Depleting Substances and Landfill Gas methodologies for other carbon credits, adding an estimated 27 million unretired credits (3.6% of the market) that meet our high-integrity standards. The Integrity Council also approved a methodology for Leak Detection and Repair (LDAR) projects in natural gas pipelines, allowing for a single crediting period. This methodology covers an estimated 19 million unretired carbon credits (2.6% of the market), primarily from projects in lower-income countries with ageing infrastructure. 🔍Road Ahead: The Integrity Council is continuing to assess carbon crediting programs alongside methodologies used to design and implement carbon reduction and removal projects. Our science-based ‘two-tick’ assessment process is paving the way towards a market that delivers transparency and credibility. 🔗Read the full press release here: https://lnkd.in/eERpiK25
