"The press cherishes its role in holding the powerful accountable. We should all cherish that. But the press themselves are among the most powerful influences on our daily lives." That is what Impress Chair Richard Ayre had to say as he delivered his keynote speech to the gathered members of the Alliance of Independent Press Councils of Europe during the annual conference last week. "We depend upon them to tell us the truth. They purport to tell us things they think we should know. They often tell us what to believe. They sometimes try to tell us how to vote. There is no reason on earth why a powerful press should not itself be held publicly and independently accountable. "As press regulators in a democracy, we at Impress have more than one duty. We have a duty to the press to defend their freedom of expression – their right to choose their own agenda; their right to express opinions; their right to ask questions that authority doesn’t want answered; their right to irritate, annoy and offend. "But we have an equal duty to the public, to the people: to defend them from falsehood masquerading as truth; to defend their rights to personal privacy; to defend them from intimidation and harassment by a press that sometimes panders to public prejudice sometimes seems to nurture it." Last week, Impress had the pleasure of hosting the Alliance of Independent Press Councils of Europe in London! 🤩 Now more than ever, it is vital that media organisations are willing to come together, share experiences and collaborate on ways we can create a safer and more honest media, and bolster the freedoms that are so important to the world of journalism. So a huge thank you to everyone who travelled from all corners of Europe, the observing members who shared their experiences from South Korea and Canada, and those who joined online! 👏 Roll on 2025! 🎉 #Media #Press #Regulation #Event #Europe #Collaboration

"Victims of press intrusion are often unaware of the availability of self-regulatory organisations and redress other than costly legal action." A new report from the Press Recognition Panel has highlighted a lack of awareness when it comes to truly independent press regulation and the work we do at Impress. It is essential that the public know how they can make complaints about publishers and how they can seek affordable legal redress if required. We recently opened up our arbitration and mediation services to everyone for this very reason. "The environment for a lot of this dangerous speech is incentivised algorithmically as a core part of the business models of these platforms. Those platforms should be accountable to reduce the harm that is caused." Impress CEO Lexie Kirkconnell-Kawana recently spoke to Naked Politics on the role the media has played in rising extremism across the UK. In the interview with Banseka Kayembe, Lexie gave her thoughts on social media regulation, the effectiveness of the Online Safety Act and how bolstering public news literacy could help avoid these scenes in the future.
