Executive Director @ Flashpoint | former @ ODNI & NCTC | Broadcast Media Analyst and Commentator | Keynote Speaker/Panelist on Geopolitical Risk
Appreciated the opportunity to speak with Carrie Pallardy this week from here at #BlackHatUSA and #DEFCON32 for this InformationWeek piece on the significance of exactly who was in the prisoner swap last week, and why corporate boards and C-suites should be paying attention to two of the Russians released in the complex deal. Neither of them are the types of Soviet military, political, or intelligence personnel that were typically swapped for between 1945-1992. Two convicted cybercriminals from Russia -- Roman Seleznev and Vladislav Klyushin -- Seleznev was serving a 14 year sentence in prison for $50 million+ in cybercrime. Klyushin was serving 9 years for a $93 million+ hacking scheme. This new cold war is hybrid and involves the private sector in ways not seen before. Especially in the wake of some massive ransomware and infostealer schemes of the past few years. Here are a couple of my quotes (as always I'm grateful and must give credit for the insights and context I get from the hundreds of anonymous Flashpoint Pro-SINTers behind the scenes!) ...“Anytime in human history when countries have some adversarial relationship, anything that indicates the ability to have diplomatic connection or even backchannel communication between senior leadership is a good thing,” Andrew Borene, executive director for global security at data and intelligence company Flashpoint, tells InformationWeek. ...Whether or not Seleznev and Klyushin return to hacking, cybercrime out of Russia will continue. “Cybercriminals inside of Russa, as long as they're attacking outside of Russia, have safe space in which to operate,” says Borene. As the world moves forward through a new cold war, cyberattacks and crime are going to continue playing a role with any enterprise as a potential victim. “This involves the whole of society to include businesses in ways that we have not seen [in] state on state competition in the past,” says Borene. “This should serve … as a wake-up call that the C-suite and the boards of directors need to pay attention to not only the cyber risk but also what's happening in the geopolitical picture writ large.” #cybersecurity #threatintelligence #hybridthreats
