We are proud to announce that our client Seafarers Hospital Society (SHS) has launched a pilot project to address a critical need for women seafarers. The charity will distribute discrete kits containing feminine hygiene products, free of charge, to female seafarers in the Port of Tilbury and the London International Cruise Terminal. Sandra Welch, CEO of the Seafarers Hospital Society, said, “We are very proud to have launched this pilot project, designed by women and created to support the health and welfare of women working at sea. Although maritime stakeholders often discuss the visible challenges women in our workforce may face — such as harassment (including sexual harassment), bullying, and discrimination in terms of pay, training and opportunities — the more subtle hurdles of a lack of access to menstrual hygiene products and the significant impact on a female seafarer’s ability to perform her duties tends to be left unremarked. This must change. I hope this innovative project makes visible this gap and paves the way for similar projects to be created across other ports in the UK.” 📢 Key drivers for the project 💡 Pilot project to first target the London International Cruise Terminal at the port of Tilbury as most of the industry’s 2% of women seafarers are employed in the cruise or ferry sectors.  💡 The kits provided by SHS will include a variety of feminine hygiene products including sanitary towels, tampons and period pants. 💡 Many existing facilities and welfare provisions onboard vessels and in ports are designed with the needs of male seafarers in mind, overlooking the specific healthcare requirements of women. 💡 A lack of menstrual hygiene products can contribute to stress and discomfort, and make it challenging for women to perform their duties onboard. 💡 Many may find it difficult to approach management or other crew members for assistance in shipping’s male-dominated workspaces and cultural factors may also contribute further to this hesitation. 💡 By providing these essential products, we are helping women to maintain their dignity, comfort and overall well-being. The project is funded by a £25,000 grant from the TK Foundation and The Seafarers’ Charity and will be used to provide 1030 feminine hygiene kits for women seafarers. This pilot project is a significant step towards creating a more inclusive and supportive environment for women seafarers. • A new project is being undertaken by the International Maritime Pilots' Association (IMPA), the Canadian National Centre of Expertise on Maritime Pilotage (NCEMP) and the Canadian Coast Guard/Garde côtière canadienne to rigorously explore remote pilotage to ground-truth its feasibility, readiness, and impacts on safe navigation practices and systems! Captain Simon Pelletier, President of IMPA says, “The number and variety of people talking about remote navigation and pilotage makes it necessary for IMPA to conduct a rigorous, objective analysis to help pilots’ organisations, competent authorities, and industry make informed decisions." "Providing authoritative, evidence-based guidance to support objective decision-making in maritime pilotage is key to ensure the continued safety of marine navigation and is part of the reason IMPA exists.” 🤔 What makes this project so unique? 🤩 IMPA’s project is unique because it brings together the know-how and experience of maritime pilots from over 50 countries conducting over 2 million acts of pilotage annually, combined with other operational, academic and advisory expertise. 🤩 It will study pilotage as a socio-technical system and the impact of any new protocols on risk, cost-effectiveness, and social acceptance. 🤩 It will consider the findings of previous shore-based pilotage projects and seek to validate the insights delivered by the project with trials of technology and protocols on conventionally navigated ships in Canada. 🤔Why is this important? ℹ This work aims to provide authoritative insights into the current and potential use of remote pilotage on conventional ships and those that might be navigated remotely or by software with autonomy in the future. 🌏 Countries rely on the expertise and local knowledge of maritime pilots to ensure the safe and efficient movement of ships in compulsory pilotage areas where marine navigation conditions are most challenging. ⚓ Maritime pilots play a vital role in ensuring that shipping does not negatively impact coastal communities and the economic, social and environmental interests of nations relying on maritime trade. 🔎 Given the role of maritime pilotage, IMPA considers it critically important that any concept that could impact compulsory pilotage practices and systems, including remote pilotage, be carefully examined and assessed. • Congratulations 🎉 to our client Manta Marine Technologies (MMT) for their newest contract to install two FuelOpt™ systems onboard Sirius Shipping AB’s upcoming 15K product/chemical tankers to optimise fuel efficiency and support Just-in-Time Arrivals (JIT). When delivered, the two 15,000 dwt vessels will be chartered by Preem AB Shipping to transport renewable raw materials and finished refined products. MMT’s green technologies will assist them in their goal of becoming the world’s first climate-neutral refinery company. Preem is adopting a JIT approach to marine transportation, adjusting vessel speed to ensure ships arrive at their destination when required, rather than burning extra fuel to arrive early only to wait to enter the port. This is where FuelOpt™ comes into play. 📢 How does FuelOpt™ support JIT? The well-established technology: 🔹Automates real-time adjustments to minimise administrative burden 🔹Improves operational performance and optimised fuel use from the outset 🔹Easily integrates onboard any ship with no commercial downtime 🔹Is fuel agnostic and futureproof 🔹Has been independently verified for fuel savings of up to 10% Richard Engelhart Bjercke, MMT’s Chief Commercial Officer, says, “Sirius Shipping and MMT are united in our goal of reducing emissions from shipping and we are delighted they have chosen FuelOpt™ for these innovative new builds. We will continue to develop our systems and push the boundaries of fuel saving alongside our customers to help them exceed regulatory targets and minimise fuel costs.” Jonas Backman, Sirius Shipping Managing Director, says “FuelOpt™ has proven a valuable and useful tool across our fleet and we did not hesitate to add its capabilities to our upcoming Evolution 15K series.” Read the full press release for more information #JITArrivals #MaritimeTechnology #Decarbonisation #NetZero #FuelOpt #tankers

  • Our industry is on the cusp of a transformative shift. As we accelerate towards decarbonisation, we will see the adoption of alternative fuels and vessel designs. While this is a much needed transition, it brings with it new challenges and risks, particularly for seafarers who will be at the coalface dealing with new technologies, fuels and on board systems.. As CHIRP’s Director (Maritime) Adam Parnell explains in Bunkerspot, to navigate this complex landscape safely, we must prioritise information sharing. Increased use of multiple new fuels, vessels and technologies can inevitably lead to a rise in safety incidents during this learning phase. Keeping critical safety lessons confined within companies is no longer viable. By fostering a culture of confidential reporting, we can collectively learn, prevent safety incidents and minimise downtime. This collaborative approach is essential to achieve our ambitious decarbonisation targets without compromising the safety of our seafarers. Want to know more? Our client MarinePALS has recently released two microlearning videos from its extensive library into the public domain to help the maritime industry fight the ongoing issue of seafarer fatalities in enclosed spaces. Capt. Pradeep Chawla, CEO at MarinePALS, said, "Our goal is to provide seafarers with the knowledge they need to protect themselves and their colleagues. We believe that the crucial information found in these videos can make a significant difference in enhancing safety standards and preventing further tragedies at sea." ⚠ Recent data from InterManager, submitted to the International Maritime Organization, documented the loss of 30 seafarers in 2023 — the second-highest annual number of fatalities recorded in nearly three decades. ℹ A majority of these tragedies took place during planned work, underscoring the need for comprehensive training and heightened safety measures. In response, MarinePALS has made freely available the following videos: 🔎 Enclosed Space Fatality: A re-enactment of a real-life enclosed space fatality incident on a tanker which emphasises the importance of always following safety procedures. 🔎 Nitrogen - the Silent Killer: This video highlights the hidden dangers of nitrogen gas which is used to inert tanks onboard a vessel. By making these two vital training videos freely accessible to all, MarinePALS aims to equip seafarers with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the dangers associated with enclosed spaces.
