🗨 'There are so many issues facing the maritime industry today, including the rights of seafarers, developments in technology, regulatory changes and challenges to address the UN Sustainable Development Goals. How do you decide when faced with so many issues, so many choices, and so many priorities?' In this month's Talking Point, Jillian Carson-Jackson et al. introduce the Claros method, which embraces the diversity of thinking in the maritime sector to identify key schools of thought to support decision-making. What do you think of the five schools of thought identified by the Claros method? And how else could we make use of our diversity to identify schools of thought to support the maritime sector? In this maritime sustainability infographic, The Shipowners' Club and ProSea Marine Education take a look at sound pollution in the ocean and what the shipping industry can do to reduce it:
Many animals use sound as their main sense and underwater noise made by human activities can have significant effects on marine life, for example by making it more difficult for marine animals to use sound for communication and navigation. This can result in collisions occurring between whales and ships. For the protection of the marine environment, it is vital that we are aware of human activities causing these disruptions and what we can do to limit human-produced noise levels. The IMO has guidelines around decreasing levels of noise, and the EU has recently set binding limits on underwater noise pollution for member states to integrate into their marine strategies.
