If you’re looking to increase your one rep maximum then it’s critical to incorporate singles within your training to expose your neuromuscular system to delivering one maximal effort, which is very different to a 3-5 rep max. Having experimented with this approach myself years ago and increasing my 1RM by about 20 kg on the back squat and front squat, I’ve used this subsequently with select athletes who’s goal is to deliberately increase their 1RM and had great results. #strengthandconditioning #sportperformance#strengthtraining #backsquat #onerepmax

Having spent a numbers of years training for the Olympic lifts and coaching numerous athletes through them, here’s my take on them. Olympic lifts and their derivatives are a great way to develop rate of force development aka explosive power for the hip and knee extensors, which is the ability to produce high forces in short time frames. And is critical for sports that involve jumping and sprinting, among others. However, the caveat is that they’re not for everyone. You need a high level of technical mastery to perform them with the required load to drive an adaptive response. The Romanian deadlift (RDL) is a popular exercise for the posterior chain (hamstrings, glute max, and lower back). However, it’s also one most people get wrong. The video below outlines key mistakes people make, followed by tips on how to perform the RDL correctly! Coaching tips: Start position: Slight bend of the knees. Descent: ‘Push hips back as though trying to touch an imaginary wall that’s just behind you’. Let the bar slide down yours thighs and work to the end range of your hamstrings, which is typically when the bar is slightly below the knees for most (or just above them, if you have shorter hamstrings). Keep the knees locked in position throughout the descent. Lastly, weight should shift towards the back of the your feet. Finish: Extend your hips and return to the start position. These technical points are important to be aware of.
