🔊New on Samuel Hall Stories: Debunking 5 Myths Associated with Faith Actors🔊 Faith actors are often dismissed as biased, overly missionary, or irrelevant within secular humanitarian efforts. However, our recent research with Islamic Relief Worldwide under the STRIDE programme debunks these misconceptions—revealing the true value that faith actors bring to the humanitarian and development landscape. In this blog, we explore the pivotal role of faith actors—individuals and organisations deeply rooted in their communities, equipped with local knowledge, cultural insights, and the trust of those they serve. Despite their profound impact, faith actors are frequently misunderstood and underutilised in broader humanitarian and localisation discussions. Here are myths we debunk through this research: 🚫 Myth 1: Faith actors are missionary and discriminatory.  ✅Reality: Most are non-missionary and do not preach or discriminate. 🌍 Myth 2: Faith actors are exclusively faith-based.  ✅Reality: Many are faith-inspired but operate as humanitarian entities without a religious agenda. 🤲 Myth 3: Faith values conflict with humanitarian values.  ✅Reality: Faith values align closely with humanitarian principles like compassion and justice. 🔄 Myth 4: Faith plays no role in secular actors’ work.  ✅Reality: Secular actors are often influenced by faith, integrating religious values into their operations. 🤝 Myth 5: All faith actors are the same.  ✅Reality: International and local faith actors each play unique and complementary roles. Drawing from our research across Afghanistan, Pakistan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Palestine, and Mozambique. our blog delves into these insights, offering compelling stories, data, and evidence that challenge prevailing assumptions. A key to dispelling these myths lies in recognising the willingness of faith actors to collaborate, partner, and join forces. By identifying their added value and aligning them with other actors in humanitarian and development practice, especially through partnerships between international and local faith actors, we can significantly advance the localisation agenda across diverse contexts. 🚨 The first case of #polio has been confirmed in #Gaza in 25 years. We call for a ceasefire to allow life-saving polio vaccinations for 640,000 children under 10. 💉Polio vaccines are in the region and ready to be distributed in August and September, but this requires full access for humanitarian supplies into Gaza from all border crossings and safe movement within the Strip. This can only be achieved with an immediate end to hostilities. At least 286 aid workers – almost all Palestinian – killed in #Gaza since 7 October 2023. Israel’s relentless bombing has turned Gaza into the world’s deadliest place to deliver aid, with hospitals, ambulances, schools, shelters, aid convoys, offices and other civilian infrastructure targeted and destroyed. We call for international law to be held. Impunity must end. Aid workers are #NotATarget.
