We're excited to be taking part in next week's Great North Night's event at the Great North Museum (Hancock). We've put together an exploration of the "hidden architecture" in some of our recent projects, and aim to bring along our VR headset so visitors can explore inside one of our buildings! I'll be there with Gavin Wu and Callum Harker. https://lnkd.in/eZ_Sve3D

We had the fantastic news yesterday that our project at Albert Place in Washington has been awarded Regional Highly Commended in this year's LABC Awards. Many congratulations to all involved. Sunderland City Council Brims Construction Limited LABC Established as Biddick School in 1893, Albert School has undergone a remarkable evolution into a supported living facility. Its primary aim is to facilitate a smooth transition for vulnerable individuals progressing from minimal assistance to self-sufficient living. The charming Victorian school building has been repurposed to encompass 15 individual apartments, all connected to a shared courtyard space. Designed with a focus on accommodating medium to long-term residency, the layout encourages residents to feel a deep sense of ownership within their living environment. This project stands as a beacon of sustainable redevelopment, demonstrating the potential to transform a long-abandoned historical building into a vibrant community asset. It skilfully preserves the architectural heritage of the Victorian era while addressing urgent contemporary social needs by providing secure, long-term housing for vulnerable adults. The design is not just practical but thoughtful, incorporating stylish, modern amenities that significantly enhance the quality of life for its residents, in addition to: upgrading the thermal performance of the building, enhancing accessibility and integrating a complex fire strategy into the restraints of the Victorian schoolhouse. The beautiful, communal courtyard, filled with lush vegetation and wildlife, offers a serene space for relaxation and community interaction, fostering a sense of belonging and well-being among the residents.

We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has supported THE BUILD so far, whether you have shared our story or made a donation. Thanks to your generosity, so far we've raised an incredible £463,245. Every contribution, big or small, will make a huge and life-changing impact on our families, by enabling us to complete THE BUILD. But our journey doesn't end here. We have a long way to go to reach our £2 million target, and we need your help to get there. Please continue to share our story and, if you can, make a donation. For the past 37 years, Martin House has been a pillar of support for thousands of families across Yorkshire. With THE BUILD, we aim to transform the hospice to meet the evolving and complex care needs of the children we serve, ensuring families can continue to access our services free of charge in a facility that matches the high level of care we provide. A special thank you to the families who have shared their stories with us. They, like all families at Martin House, are truly inspirational. THE BUILD is about creating a lasting legacy for children and their families for the next 40 years and beyond. To BACK THE BUILD and donate today, please click https://lnkd.in/e85VN_xj #BackTheBuild #CharityAppeal #MartinHouseHospice With thanks to HARIBO UK our headline sponsor.

How can design enhance children's development? Early years schemes present a unique and fun opportunity to get in the mind of a child, playing and experimenting with spaces to design practical and inspirational settings where children can grow. Drawing on their 20 years of experience, Nicky Watson and Stuart Franklin explore how spaces can be effectively designed to aid children's development, now and into the future.
