Getting scammed is easy... ⚠️ Finding investors can be difficult and time-consuming so by the time you find someone who’s keen to invest in your startup, you might be tempted to get the deal signed as quickly as possible. Scammers can be sophisticated and convincing – often it isn’t easy to distinguish between fraudsters and bona fide investors. Just because they look professional doesn’t mean they’re legitimate. 380+ attended this weeks' Investor Outreach Masterclass with me, Daniel Sawko and Sam Marchant. 3 takeaways: 1️⃣ Personalisation is no longer a nice-to-have. It's a must-to have. We live in an overstimulated world where more ideas, concepts, and thoughts fly by during a 30 minute TikTok binge than what our ancestors would be exposed to throughout the entirety of their lifespans. For Investors, multiply that effect. They're bombarded with as many as 100+ pitches per week. Hyper-personalising your outreach is a must. You only have 1 chance to make a 1st impression and you're operating in a short attention span world. 2️⃣ Good cold outreach starts with a good investor target. You need to be able to conduct your Due Diligence on the investor: - any competitors to you in their portfolio? - does their investment thesis align with your Growth Roadmap & GTM? - did any of the Partners expressed positive interest in your vertical/ sector/ tech/business model (articles, X, LinkedIn posts, Website bio, etc...) 3️⃣ Best time to start reaching out to Investors? Yesterday. I often hear "raising capital takes a long time" and tend to correct Founders to understand "forming relationships takes a long time". You can still leverage tentative replies, even the dreaded "you're too early" If you got a reply like this from a VC 10 months ago, today, you're in a perfect position to follow up ('this is what has happened since I last emailed...')
