There are many books that provide support and information for families of people with eating disorders. This one by Eva Musby is written specifically for parents and carers and is really helpful at guiding loved ones through the challenges of supporting someone with an eating disorder. We have covered eating disorders a little few weeks ago. It is a challenging and emotive topic, yet it is vital we talk about the hardships ED sufferers and their loved one’s experience. If you are a partner, parent, sibling or a friend to someone with an ED, it is important that you are also supported and take care of your own physical and mental health, so you can be there for those you struggle. There are charities and support groups working directly with parents and carers of people with ED, so do reach out and let them help you. Tomorrow, we have on a podcast the dynamic duo Lisa Watson and Jeanette Forder. Jeanette Forder is a 59-year-old post-menopausal woman and part of the Fifty-Something Fem-preneur movement.  Jeanette is the Founder and CEO of Phoenix Wellness Coaching, a company specialising in helping individuals and organisations to thrive together through menopause. She set up Phoenix Wellness Coaching in October 2020 after experiencing a long and at times difficult perimenopause herself, which ultimately drove her to change careers leaving her safe corporate HR role in the middle of the pandemic.  With 20 years’ experience as a Senior HR Business Partner and a Coach, working closely with, advising and challenging senior teams to build an engaged and inclusive culture where staff can thrive and perform to their highest level, Jeanette translates her own experience into useful advice for other senior managers to help them to build a sustainable, and resilient workforce that respects diversity and harnesses the power of difference at every employee’s life stage. Her career started in acute medicine and A&E, but since 2003 she has been working in NHS General Practice in Primary Care as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner and an independent nurse prescriber. Her own personal experiences and special interest in women’s health fuelled her passion to train as a Menopause Specialist to provide top quality care and advice to all women, at every stage of their menopause journey. I recently stumbled across the Maturitas (International Journal of Midlife Health and Beyond) article about menopause and social media and thought I’d share some of the good, the bad and the ugly that you may stumble across when trying to learn more about menopause and equip yourself for this important life stage. The article opened with a great quote “There has been a sharp increase in the number of women talking about the menopause on social media…as many turn online for…advice on how best to manage their symptoms.” But what does this mean in practice? ✅Building a Community - social media helps break the taboo of menopause by allowing women to talk about their experiences, interact with others and feel less alone. There are many online groups ranging from menopause cafes, to Facebook groups where you can find support or get answers to your questions. ❌False information - a downside to these communities can be the sharing of misinformation, inaccurate or confusing information. You will often see women disagreeing with what a GP may have told another woman which can be dangerous. Remember one woman’s experience can be very different to another and always listen to the advice of your GP first. ✅ Activisim - social media is a vital campaigning tool for menopause activists. It enables petitions to be shared easily enabling more women to get involved with the conversation. We have seen lots of change as a result of this positive side of social media such as changing views about HRT, to wider availability of HRT. ❌Commercial gain - another downside is the amount of selling that you will see on social media around menopause. 16% of Instagram posts are selling a product or service to help with menopause. Remember not all of these products in particular, will have been rigorously tested or have the research to back up their claims and we also know that many dangerous products are sold via the internet or social media so we need to be careful. Using social media to learn about menopause and find the right support can be fraught with misinformation and needs careful consideration. However, when we follow reputable sources we can learn so much and get the support we need whether we are a private individual or an organisation. The whole system is very much built for male biology as when it was built, women were not part of the process and no consideration was therefore given to their biology. The most successful women often pay the highest price as their success comes at a cost because they are forced to deny and work against their biology in order to conform to the current system. When any consideration is given to female biology, we tend to talk about ‘making allowances’ and ‘tip-toeing’, we are creating discrimination laws as if being a female is a disability and try to convince women they can have it all and if they don’t, it is them that are lacking. What needs to happen, is a complete structural and cultural change, so we can create, live and thrive in a society that is accesible and supportive of all needs, that lets go of arbitrary rules and allows people to do the best they can with what they’ve got. Flexible working and reasonable workplace adjustments are a good place to start, but we have a long way to go. That’s why part of our mission is to empower businesses with the tools and knowledge to create an inclusive and supportive environment for their female workforce. The other part is empowering and educating women, so they can be not only part of the process, but at the vanguard of it, leading the way. We start the conversations and give platform to wise, brave and altogether incredible women to light the way. We support female led business and form alliances with men that have seen the light.
