London Borough of Barking and Dagenham

Government Administration

About us

Barking and Dagenham is one of London's most exciting and fastest growing boroughs. The council is facing some huge challenges, but we also have the opportunity of a lifetime to grow the borough and our community. We’re 20 minutes from London and have space for 60,000 new homes. We’re building London’s first Youth Zone and are on track to house a new film studio in Dagenham, rivalling the likes of Pinewood and boosting our local economy. We also now have our very own university campus, thanks to Coventry University setting up CU London, offering flexible learning and affordable courses to residents who historically had no aspirations to go to university. Change is needed and it’s happening already. We’re investing in our physical infrastructure and in our community, providing what people need to be able to help themselves. • As you may have heard, a fire took place at a block on Freshwater Road in Dagenham on Monday morning. Our thoughts are with everyone affected - we’re relieved that there is no loss of life and grateful that all residents are safe and accounted for. The building is privately owned and over 80 people were evacuated from it in the early hours of Monday morning. In these situations, the council’s primary role is to provide emergency support to all affected residents. Together with our partners, we have provided access to essential services, including emergency accommodation to residents who are unable to return home and have nowhere to stay. And working with housing providers, we’ll continue to support residents to secure longer term accommodation. At the same time, we set up a rest centre at Becontree Heath Leisure Centre, offering a safe space for residents, providing food, supplies and well-being support. Right now, we’re not accepting any donated items but we have set up a donations page where people can donate to help those who have lost everything. If you’d like to, you can contribute here: https://orlo.uk/x5e1Q so we can provide as much support as we can. We’d like to thank the London Fire Brigade for their bravery, other emergency services and charity organisations including the British Red Cross for their support in very difficult circumstances.
