About us

We are one of the largest and busiest acute hospital trusts in Europe and we provide healthcare and specialist services for people from the city of Leeds, Yorkshire and the Humber and beyond.   We play an important role in the training and education of medical, nursing and dental students, and are a centre of world-class research and pioneering new treatments. Leeds Teaching Hospitals has a budget of £1.4 billion and employs around 20,000 people. Our care and clinical expertise is delivered from seven hospitals on five sites, and they are all joined by our vision to be the best for specialist and integrated care. This includes St James's University Hospital, Leeds General Infirmary, Leeds Children's Hospital, Leeds Dental Institute, Chapel Allerton Hospital, Seacroft Hospital and Wharfedale Hospital. Our staff helped to define the values and behaviours that we should work to, and this has become known as The Leeds Way. This forms the foundation of our culture, our ethos and how we work every day.

  • Clinical staff have had the chance to see for themselves the brilliant progress being made on the nearly ready Elective Recovery Theatres project at Wharfedale Hospital. More than 60 colleagues from Leeds Teaching Hospitals and Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust were able to tour the new facilities as works near completion. The project began with the two trusts collaborating to secure NHS England funding to support our post-covid recovery through the development of elective care hubs. Costing £12m, the project increases the number of operating theatres from two to four and increases the admission and discharge capacity of the unit. It also relocates and increases the capacity of our day treatment facility. The feedback on the day was fantastic with many staff commenting on how excited they were to see the result of their feedback and planning in the design stage come to life. It’s a fantastic investment in Otley for our patients, staff, and local community.

  • Congratulations to our colleagues here at the Trust working in partnership with NHS West Yorkshire ICB – their ‘Integrated Approach to Improving Lipid Optimisation in West Yorkshire’ has been shortlisted for a Health Service Journal award! The entry is in the Medicines, Pharmacy and Prescribing Initiative category and focuses on how we’ve better empowered healthcare professionals across 16 primary care networks to manage lipids among patients with or at risk of cardiovascular disease. Lipids are fatty particles that are transported around the body in the blood, and when lipid levels exceed normal levels it can lead to problems such as heart disease. Well done to everyone involved and fingers crossed for the awards evening later in the year!

  • Congratulations to the Critical Care Support Group, which celebrated its second anniversary this month. The group is run by the Critical Care Rehab team and provides a safe space for patients and their families who have previously spent time in critical care to share their experiences and learn from one another. The monthly meet-up sees around 10 regular attendees and welcomes patients who have spent time on critical care units across West Yorkshire. One patient, Chris, who has been part of the group from the start, has become the Patient Support Lead, and travels each month from his home in Liverpool. Well done to everyone who has contributed to the group’s success!

I recently had the pleasure of attending Cardio-Respiratory’s first awards evening since 2018, which was held at Headingley Stadium. It was a great evening and I was pleased to see our 7 Commitments coming to life in many different ways. With more than 400 nominations, my congratulations to all those who were nominated, highly commended, or won in their respective categories.

  • As part of our annual 7 Commitments focus, we are sharing information about our Time To Shine categories, which this year were based on each commitment. Today we’re highlighting the winning entry in our Delivering the financial plan category was the Daily Workforce Management Dashboard. This is a collaboration between the Patient Level Information and Costing System (PLICS) team, Corporate Nursing and Clinical Service Units (CSUs), giving a real-time view of CSU rostering to mitigate rota gaps in advance avoiding unnecessary and unplanned costs of agency cover.

  • As part of our annual 7 Commitments focus, we are continuing to share information about our Time To Shine categories, which this year were based on each commitment. This week we’re sharing the winning entry in our Reducing length of stay category, Leeds Children’s Hospital Virtual Ward Pilot Project. The team have pioneered a new way of caring for some children in paediatric medicine, respiratory medicine, and haematology and oncology to be looked after at home, reducing length of stay or admission avoidance for nearly 400 patients.
