Congratulations to three of our fabulous social workers for being nominated in this year’s Social Worker of the Year Awards, held in November. It’s testament to the team that they have a chance to win at the most prestigious awards in the sector. Our terrific trio are Jonas Kurkalang, who’s up for Social Worker of the Year; Andy O’Sullivan, who’s vying for Team Manager of the Year and Aaron Evans, for Newly Qualified Social Worker of the Year. No time limit for education in Hounslow! Kaz is a 21-year-old young man from Feltham, who grew up in care and after support from our Virtual College, has achieved an A* in Maths and two A’s in Physics and Further Maths at ‘A’Level.  He is set to study Physics with Theoretical Physics at King’s College London. Here, he describes his unconventional journey to university, emphasising an important message for young people in the borough - there’s no time limit on education. I grew up with my Grandmother, but left Poland to be with my mother aged nine, initially in Bedfont, but after a family break-up I found myself in care. I have spent time in Dunstable, Harlow, Hounslow, Ramsgate, and Shrewsbury, but despite endless upheavals, false starts, and failures, have always believed in myself. By my own admission, I’m a headstrong, opinionated young man. Character traits that have worked both ways for me. But I’m also determined, and even at my lowest, was hellbent on never seeing myself as some kind of victim. It wasn’t until I was eleven that I had any kind of structured education, while attending the Maudsley Hospital. I was living in Hounslow at the time, and found myself studying at Woodbridge Park. It was here that I encountered a tutor called Mr Haysum. He wasn’t a slave to protocol and was happy to teach me maths more suitable for students five years ahead of me in the curriculum. It broke my heart when he left, and I was uprooted to Shropshire aged 14, for more ‘special schooling’ and the chaos that surrounded it there. But I found I could comfortably immerse myself in subjects like Differential Equations - not every teenager’s idea of fun - so self-study seemed the logical solution. I soon found myself in semi-independence in Dunstable and found it liberating and then studied at Strode’s College in Esher, where I breezed through my GCSE Pathway exams. I still clashed with teachers though, and despite passing my A Level mocks I was told not to return. If it wasn’t for a fantastic Hounslow social worker called Nadia Chernev, I could have given up. This is also where Hounslow Virtual College and Natasha Woolman provided much needed support to get me over the line and I crammed two years of A Level study into five months earlier this year to emerge with two As in Physics and Further Maths and an A* in Maths. I’m excited about attending King’s and relish the opportunity of studying as an adult with likeminded people. I would encourage all young people – not just care experienced - to keep believing in yourself and ignore the wasters. I have been responsible for my own destiny, and I hope these words can influence others with challenges in their lives to back themselves when shaping their futures. • This week, as part of a suite of letters to the new Government which lay out Hounslow’s willingness to work with them in a number of priority areas - Local Government Funding, Housing, Net Zero and Health and Care Integration - the Leader of Hounslow Council, Cllr Shantanu Rajawat, has formally written to the Chancellor, the Rt Hon Rachel Reeves MP, to reaffirm the Council’s commitment to delivering equitable growth for all our communities. The Leader’s letter is clear that - with the second highest GVA per hour worked in London, and a contribution to the national economy greater than that of major cities like Belfast, Liverpool and Sheffield - Hounslow is poised and ready to lead in mission of national renewal. The Council’s comprehensive regeneration plans under Opportunity Hounslow, provide a roadmap for targeted development, supporting delivery of thousands of homes and jobs, and ensuring our communities thrive To fully realise our vision, the Council is committed to working in partnership with the Government to secure stable, fair, and sufficient funding to realise our shared vision for economic growth.   In his letter Cllr Rajawat has invited the Chancellor to visit #Hounslow to demonstrate how we can collaboratively shape a prosperous future.
