Artificial intelligence presents unique challenges related to bias and discrimination. AI systems are only as good as the data they are trained on. Biased input data can perpetuate and amplify existing societal inequalities and discriminatory behaviour. The recent #AI Summits in the UK and South Korea pretend to be about ensuring AI technology is developed safely and responsibly, yet their outputs are banal statements and platitudes. Our GENIAL research project focusses on how generative AI tools are used in practice by students in real time. Researchers Dorottya S., Jon Cardoso-Silva and Marcos Ennes Barreto have analysed how students use these tools differently across qualitative and quantitative subjects. How does data regulation work for our digital society? This one-hour workshop, delivered by leading experts in technology law, Andrew Murray and Orla Lynskey both from the LSE Law School, was on of the #FestivalSkills events at the 2024 #LSEFestival. The session explored how UK and EU regulation protects individuals’ data, and how this might change in the future. It discussed the fundamentals of data regulation – how data is gathered and processed, held and stored according to the law and the outlined the latest legal developments including the Data Act and the AI Act. It outlined how regulation can support opportunities for data use, and set limitations on abuse or misuse of data. Beyond simply understanding #AI technologies and how they work, AI literacy involves acquiring essential skills and competencies which are key for using AI-driven technology effectively, viewing these technologies critically, and questioning their design and implementation. While some might associate AI literacy with professional competence, its importance extends to critical thinking and understanding the impacts AI is having on the world around us.
