Visiting fellow Marina Sapritsky-Nahum has recently published a book with Indiana University Press called 'Jewish Odesa: Negotiating Identities and Traditions in Contemporary Ukraine'. Voter turnout in the recent UK #generalelection was 60%, the lowest in 23 years. On LSE British Politics and Policy, Mukulika Banerjee (LSE Department of Anthropology) argues that the #UK needs to cultivate a democratic culture that engages citizens on #political issues beyond just the elections. Otherwise, #democracy and its institutions are in danger of disintegration.

Hannah Cottrell, PhD’s doctoral research was based on 18 months of comparative ethnographic research with students attending an international IB school and an international Japanese school in London, UK. Her work in schools investigated how students prepared for, navigated, and imagined their future educational and life transitions. It focuses on the complex ways in which global educational institutions, national educational policies, international job markets, structural inequalities, and family expectations, intersect to create aspirational pathways for students. Overall, the thesis explores the challenges of becoming the global middle class as a relational project through the student lens and argues that situated inequalities are reproduced and sustained through market driven education. Hannah currently works on multiple projects at LSE and expects to continue pursuing her research interests in schooling and education policy, as well as in health inequalities through her research at QMUL.

Congratulations to Agathe Faure on the publication of her most recent article, 'The Movement and Stillness of Weaving: How Emberá Dobidá Women Imagine and Experience Urbanization in Medellín, Colombia' published in the Journal of Anthropological Research. 📖 'Drawing on twenty months of fieldwork conducted with Emberá Dobidá women in the city of Medellín, Colombia, this article aims to examine the detailed components of their recent urbanization. I trace how “weaving beads” in the city affects the ways in which Emberá Dobidá women imagine and live their urban experience. I suggest that specific movements, produced in the weaving practice, generate specific transformations, both desired and uncontrolled. I show how new aspirations have led women to desire “to sit at home” and to rely on weaving to find a certain stillness. Stillness is then active, ideally transformative and transitory, and potentially allows women to build a future outside the house. I also examine how women’s aspirations are broken by the reality of the weaving industry in Medellín which effectively makes them stuck. Repetitive, painful, unhalted movements generate disappointing urban experiences and prevent desired transformations.' https://lnkd.in/egggCqVq.

Just published! 📕 One Hundred Years of Argonauts: Malinowski, Ethnography and Economic Anthropology Edited by Chris Hann and Deborah James. 'Malinowski’s Argonauts of the Western Pacific was a major contribution to anthropological theory and method, while simultaneously establishing the sub-field of economic anthropology. Even a century after its publication, Malinowski’s pioneering work remains critical for anthropology in a postcolonial age. This volume uses ethnographic studies from around the world to contextualize the work politically and intellectually, examining its gestation and influence from multiple perspectives. It critically explores the meaning of “economy” for Malinowski from his formation in the Austro-Hungarian Empire to his path-breaking fieldwork in Melanesia and ensuing career in London.'
