Data from our suite of human rights indices highlights a growing divergence between the US and other developed economies on key labour rights issues. The US ranks 4th highest risk among OECD member states on our Migrant Workers Index, behind Turkey, Mexico, and Israel, and 5th highest risk on our Child Labour Index. Child labour and risks to migrant workers have surged faster in the US over the past two years than in any other country, according to data from our Human Rights Dataset. The US has seen the largest increase in risk globally on our Child Labour Index since 2022. Its performance has also sharply deteriorated on our Migrant Workers Index, with only Morocco registering a bigger downgrade. The findings coincide with a sharp rise in the number of migrants entering the US. At least 2.4m people – including around 140,000 unaccompanied children – attempted to cross the southern US border in 2023 alone. Our analysis shows those that successfully make it into the country are increasingly vulnerable to exploitation in sectors such as agriculture and manufacturing.
