Using marketing to improve the world (and not just sell more stuff) | co-founder of MarketingKind

In yesterday's You're MarketingKind gathering we explored the priorities and interests of our members and how they would like to shape the future of MarketingKind. One goal identified in the session is for us to hold more in-person gatherings, which is one reason we're so excited about our xChange in London with Mike Berners-Lee and Lord Deben on September 10th. We are unable to host in-person gatherings without the generous support of our members, so a big thank you to Caroline Bates for hosting this. We'll post about 2025 in-person gatherings soon and we'll keep working on the California branch for the future :) Another important desire from the community is to be able to connect with each other more easily between gatherings, so we're experimenting with a newly created LinkedIn Group for members: https://lnkd.in/erZZ7WzG (If you haven't yet received an invite from me and you're a member, please message me and I'll send one over.) I'll share more of the details for our plans for the future in the MarketingKind community group, so that members can continues to discuss and build on them. If you have thoughts and ideas for MarketingKind please do get in touch. And thank you for your hugely helpful insights, ideas and questions Natasha Blunt, PCC Ann-Marie Hall Alan Thompson Martin Uttley Sarah Hughes B2B Marketing Expert Jenny Barrett Dr Chris Arnold Neil Linford-Relph Lorna Westwood Lauren Cooper Catherine Archer and Paul Skinner

    • Can you shape the future of the MarketingKind community? We would love to hear from you.

"We know that law is designed to protect power, but we retain a belief that if used creatively we can short circuit that power and that law does hold out a promise for emancipatory change and systems change." In yesterday's Coffee with a Cause we began a brand and marketing review with the Global Legal Action Network (GLAN). Although you may not have heard of the charity you are likely aware for its innovative legal cases, which are holding governments and corporations to account where they are undermining human rights overseas. Their recent win in the High Court with World Uyghur Congress for example, will ensure that the National Crime Agency investigates forced labour goods as the proceeds of crime, which could have massive consequences for high street retail giants importing good from China. Thank you Gearóid Ó Cuinn Dearbhla Minogue Amy Franklin and Rochelle Ferguson for your incredibly inspiring work. We are pleased we can play a small role in helping GLAN to more effectively engage the partners, funders and volunteers it needs to grow. And thank you to our MarketingKind members for your insights in this session and beyond Adrian Farina Catherine Archer Dominic Cooper Neil Linford-Relph Katharine Hulls and Paul Skinner If you're interested in joining us in support the work of GLAN please message me.

Working in advertising was a blast. I was at the best agency in the world, doing great creative work with super talented people. So why did I leave?  There's a desperate need for people who can help companies see clearly the state of the world we’re in, and who can help them engage productively with all their stakeholders – not just their consumers. Agencies are great concentrations of these capabilities. But they’re kept in a box by their clients, rarely able to access more meaningful conversations. These have been my reflections since I did a talk last week with MarketingKind, a network of lovely marketing folk asking themselves how the skills and talents of their industry can be more broadly applied to the challenges that companies – and people and planet – are facing. It’s a great question, and I was delighted to join them last week to talk about The Activist Leader. Thanks to Caroline Bates and Citizen Good for the invitation, as well as Anna Mullenneaux and Paul Skinner.

Using marketing to improve the world (and not just sell more stuff) | co-founder of MarketingKind

How can we restore our collective imagination? This is the question that Kian Bakhtiari put to us and explored with us in yesterday's You're MarketingKind gathering. He believes we have a crisis of imagination and we need to use marketing and communications to create a shared sense of language and vision to help us imagine a better future. Kian inspired us with his work at The People and gave advice for helping to breakdown the notion that the world is fixed and unbending. You can see a short clip from the session below. He suggested we: ~Nurture the beginner mindset ~Evoke the power of play ~Take people out of their usual setting to give them a new perspective Together we debated whether businesses have become more or less creative in the past 15 years. And we nominated Neil Linford-Relph for Minster of Imagination for the new (imaginary) government department. Using marketing to improve the world (and not just sell more stuff) | co-founder of MarketingKind

I was inspired by Kian Bakhtiari's recent TEDX Talk in which he described our crisis of imagination, our inability to imagine a future that is different to our current reality, and how it is holding us back from solving our biggest challenges. So we've invited him to lead a You're MarketingKind discussion this Wednesday July 10th to explore the power of collective imagination and how we can use it to create reality. Kian created The People, a next-gen marketing consultancy powered by 150+ diverse young changemakers. He was formerly Youth Insight Lead at Dentsu and is now Advisor to UN Climate Change and One Young World Ambassador. He has been named one of the Top 50 Future Leaders by the Financial Times for his contributions to marketing. He regularly writes about marketing through a Millennial and Gen-Z lens for Forbes CMO Network and is deeply passionate about using the power of creativity for good. In this discussion we’ll draw on Kian experience leading change through The People, his recent Tedx Talk and his research for his forthcoming book titled Marketing for Social Change. If you are not yet a member of the MarketingKind community and you'd like to attend please message me about our 30-day free trial offer. #imagination #polycrisis #marketing

What type of Activist Leader are you or could you be? We don't often think of activism from within businesses, but it is playing an important part of creating the systemic changes needed for society, the economy and of course the environment. In yesterday's MarketingKind xChange with Jon Miller, author of The Activist Leader and founder of Open For Business, we had the incredible opportunity to explore with him how business leaders at all levels can lean into solving the world's biggest problems as part of their business imperative. And we learned more about our own leadership capabilities in the process. Thank you Jon for your insights, vision and generosity. And a huge thank you to Caroline Bates for being a brilliant host and to Citizen Good for bringing us together in person. I was not surprised to learn that the majority of participants recognised themselves as 'Pathfinders' among the Activist Leadership Archetypes as we are a community of people helping to forge new paths and create needed new paradigms. It was wonderful to see you and thank you for your fantastic questions as always Elaine Roberts Jiajia Smith Tom Firth Peter Harrison Michelle Carvill Dr Chris Arnold Catherine Archer Lauren Cooper Natasha Blunt, PCC Claire Kennedy Kian Bakhtiari Arunjay K. Using marketing to improve the world (and not just sell more stuff) | co-founder of MarketingKind

Meet Parisa Wright, founder of Greener & Cleaner, a charity solving for social isolation, the cost of living crisis and the climate emergency all at once. MarketingKind members came together in yesterday's Coffee with a Cause to work with Parisa because we all want a Community Hub like theirs in our local shopping centres and on our high streets. They are transforming the way the public engages with climate change. It is about learning or re-engaging with heritage and life skills, so that we waste less and spend less and make new friends in the process. Thank you Parisa for your incredible leadership. Thank you Jackie Marshall for introducing us to Parisa and hosting a great session yesterday. And thank you for your brilliant insights Simon Garnett Richard Wain Kate Jones Teresa Norman Neil Linford-Relph and Paul Skinner. If your organisation may be interested in a wellbeing/ sustainability learning session with Greener & Cleaner please get in touch.
