“The knowledge that you gain is enormous, and you feel more confident to help others”. Nita Hernanz, Mary Ward Adult Education student. We’re thrilled to share the outstanding achievement of our student, Encarnita, for winning the Older Volunteer of the Year at the Southwark Stars Volunteer Awards, hosted by Community Southwark . Nita, a committed volunteer at Parent Action Citizens Advice and one of our Community Interpreting students. At 76, Nita dedicates her time as a community interpreter for the residents of Southwark. At Mary Ward she's currently pursuing her Level 3 Community Interpreting qualification, which focuses on practical and theoretical elements of interpreting in Public Services and prepares students for interpreting work. Her tutor, Maria Del Pino, remarks, "Nita exemplifies determination, intelligence, and growing confidence. She's learned the importance of supporting her linguistic community." Nita shares her thoughts, "I would encourage bilingual students to study community interpreting because the knowledge that you gain is enormous. You feel more confident, learn public services subjects. I also encourage them to volunteer, because the experience is very rewarding." We couldn’t be prouder of Nita and Maria. Their efforts show just how powerful education and community support can be. They inspire us all to step up, use our skills, and make a real difference. We are delighted to announce that Redbridge Institute of Adult Education and the Mary Ward Centre are entering into a new formal strategic partnership. This collaboration aims to enhance access to creative arts education across East London, offering an expanded range of courses at both Gants Hill and Stratford locations. Therese Reinheimer-Jones , CEO of Mary Ward Settlement, “We are so pleased to be working with Redbridge Institute. Together, we can continue to offer high-quality teaching and facilities to support the skills development for local residents in the creative arts sector, which is thriving and growing in East London.” Principal William Pickford CMgr MCIM from Redbridge Institute shares, “Rather than compete for limited arts funding and declining student numbers, the two specialist adult education institutions have entered into a partnership agreement.
